Good bottles are getting so rare around here. Weller anything, Eagle Rare, McKenna 10, haven’t seen that level of bourbon around here in a couple years. Too many restaurants buying all the allocated bottles around here. Sucks.

I went to tasting at a friend's house (ok, his garage) last night. Tried a boatload of different whiskeys, so many that I got so buzzed I forgot to take a picture. :lr Some of the pours were single barrel picks, Russell's (several), Knob Creek, Elijah Craig. Then some others I've never tried... Russell's Single Rickhouse, some 70's Wild Turkey, 70's Old Fitzgerald, Lot B.
A guy who does a lot of barrel picks for our group came and brought me two of their latest Knob Creek pick. Unfortunately, the Maker's Mark and Elijah Craig picks I ordered weren't in yet.

Those KC barrel picks are always good. My local store just did one of those and a barrel of Larceny (probably my favorite budget bourbon).

It's true, Pete, all the sib Knob Creeks I have had were either good or great. And if you can find a 14-15 year barrel, even better.
Is the Larceny a barrel proof pick, or closer to normal proof?

Did a little hunting today. Found a few surprises at my main B&M. A Midwinter Nights Dram, EC18, Woodford Reserve Triple Sonoma Finish. Decided on the WR after talking to one of the managers. Also, looks like I’m on the raffle list for this year. Last years is already set.
Hit up a couple more stores, not finding much. Went to one I don’t frequent often. Now I remember why. They had the same WR I bought, but for $50 more. Their normal prices are slightly above msrp, then they get you good on the HTF stuff.

HH announced the A124 ECBP. 10yr, 9mo. 119 proof.
I'm down to try it, but might try to get a sample or read some reviews first. ECBP's used to be a "buy two bottles blind" type of purchase but I ran out of space :sl
I have a friend working up a tasting of 2018-2022 ECBP batches, the goal is to do them blind in brackets before revealing which is which, I've tried them all since 2019 but rarely side by side so it should be fun

Same here, sample it first or wait for reviews. Who knows, it could be phenomenal. In the Reddit thread I saw the announcement on, some people are wanting HH to label these releases like Bardstown does with their stuff. The 10 year age statement might just be a percentage of the mix. Could be older juice in there.
Post your blind tasting results when you’re done. Curious to see how things score out.

The last couple of nights I've been alternating between Penelope Barrel Strength and OF 1920 Prohibition Style. Both are enjoyable, although the Penelope comes off a little hot. I'm not a huge OF fan but the 1920 PS is damned good. I didn't even realize it was 115 proof until I looked closely at the bottle.

I never understand how guys accumulate so much bourbon. I must have a drinking problem.....That's a helluva collection.
Got told today at my liquor store to expect a call within a few days. They are getting all their allocated bottles in soon and I'm #9 on the list. I've heard he's got, Pappys, EHT, Blantons, Multiple Weller, Eagle Rare, Mckenna 10, and god knows what else.

When we bought our house my wife said I could build whatever size bar I wanted but couldn't store booze anywhere else in the house. I went way bigger than I could have imagined, but even adding extra hidden shelves I'm at capacity. I also keep all the wine, beer and other spirits (plus a vino humidor) in the bar as well but the side reserved for American whiskey is busting at the seems and in serious need of some depletion :sl

Had time yesterday to hit up a store before my dinner order was ready for pickup. I’ve been to this store once before, and promptly left when I saw some of the prices. Thought I’d give it another shot. Yup, same inflated prices. 1792 12yr, $249. WSR, $60. Asked about OWA. The girl told me she could order it and call me when it came in. I said it all depends on price. She then proceeded to tell me they only sell at state minimum, “see these tags? The state sends us them”. Oh really? I didn’t have the heart to argue with her.

It's really bad right now. That's why I like my store so much. I got my Stagg JR for $60, they had Weller SR, 107 and Single Barrell for $39 each, Eagle Rare for $39, Blantons for $60. Basically MSRP. That's why I buy from them. That's how every store should be.

Those are MSRP around here as well, with tax.
We have a group of chain stores in the area called Liquor Depot. They have okay prices on most bourbon bottles, but anything allocated, it is marked up higher than secondary. I saw a THH BTAC on Saturday and they wanted $800 for it. Secondary is $550 right now. Rule of thumb for newbies in DFW, if it has Depot in the name and sells allocate bourbon, it is going to be very expensive. -(P

A few years ago one of my best friends moved to Missoula and I was just getting into bourbon and had a different friend go on a hunting trip out west and found a couple bottles of Blantons. So I call my buddy in Missoula and asked him to look for some Blantons the next time he stopped into his local. He called me back an hour later and asked how many I wanted. Shocked, I said how many do they have? He says 4 cases (16 bottles). Next logical question was how much? He goes, $58 a bottle. I told him (and he wasn't a bourbon guy at this point either), "this is going to sound a little nuts, but if you can swing it, buy them all."
He does and said "because I bought them all she gave me $4 off per bottle!"
So I tell him how much we could sell them for and he figures out what's going on. We ended up splitting the haul 8 bottles each. I sold four and kept four but we ended averaging about a $100 profit on each bottle we sold.
Sad thing is I'm down to my last bottle.

I have the Blantons ranked in that order from my experience as well. It's sad that Blantons gets the hate that it does, but I get it. It's certainly because it's so sought after (mostly because of the horses), but I really think it's one of the best bourbons at that abv. It leaves a little to be desired proof wise, but the flavor is fantastic in my opinion.

That's a lotta Bookers, likely on par with how much comes into the entire state over here. It's crazy how rare it is to see it around here, good thing I have a few bottles open that help me scratch the itch when I feel it
A friend put together a march madness competition to determine what the best batch of ECBP is once and for all, he used all 12 year age stated bottles with batch codes, so A118-A123. First matchup was wildly different with a clear winner, second was harder to pick. I think after the first round it's going to start to get pretty tough to tell these apart but I'm super excited to find out the results

Love me some Bowman, some of the John J Bowman single barrels have been delicious but the Brothers small batch can be right up there with them, just a little lighter on the proof. If you ever get a chance to try any Abraham Bowman's don't pass it up, their annual release that has some seriously big hitters (going back to the old days of 17yr 140+ proof "Abe Bowman" aka GTS single barrels). I got a bottle of their Gingerbread #2 in a lottery a couple years ago, they took barrels used to age Hardywood's gingerbread stout and put some aged whiskey in them to finish off, the result is the perfect snowy winter day pour :dr

Most of the Abe's go out through a lottery where you have to pick up at the distillery in VA, an hour from my in-laws so they usually end up entering all the lotteries whether they know it or not :)

Serious question for all you bourbon nerdniks ... Evan Williams: I know it's a gd cheap well brand, but I keep reading it's one of the best values to be had out there. I probably should buy it and try it, but no one is more miserly than yours truly, so I thought I'd see what the resident experts have to say. Thoughts?

Hey Vin! Give the Bottled In Bond a try (white label), 100 proof and at least 4 years old for very cheap. The 80 proof black label is not worth the time, but the BiB can be a decent pour. Although they stopped selling them outside of KY, the Evan Williams single barrel was another solid bottle that drank well above it's price tag. They just recently stopped selling those out of the state so there might be some around

I second the BIB and Single Barrel. They both drink pricier than they are. However, I do keep a bottle of Black Label (which is 86 proof) on hand for an occasional end of the evening drink after I've destroyed my palette with better whiskies and smokes. :)

I agree with Sterns and PW assessments on the EW BIB and SiB, but that is if you want to go inexpensive. There are a lot of other bourbons out there that are good and usually in the $15-$25 range. Early Time BIB is one that I like that is around $20-$25 a bottle.

Last week I acquired a bottle of Little Book Chapter 3. I had a bottle a couple years back and it was so disappointing when you know the ingredients ( 9 year old Knob Creek, 9 year old Basil Hayden's, 11 year old Booker's, and 12 year old Baker's. ) . It's so universally loved, I speculated that I got a bad bottle somehow. This should be my wheelhouse and I hated it.

Last night I cracked the Little Book Chapter 3. It's so different from the first bottle I owned, which was awful, straight black pepper. I don't know if "bad" or tainted bottles are a thing, but the difference is night and day.
I'll revisit in 3 weeks like I do with Booker's.

I have to say after trying out the OF1924 twice, small amount each time and neat, it’s very good. I would say well worth the MSRP but paying more? Sucks. Probably not. Depends on the buyer. For a comparison, if I had to pay the same for this or Johnny Walker Blue, it’s a push.
Better than Macallen 18 because 18 is a ridiculous price.
The OF1924 is smooth, very prominent caramel flavor with oak on the finish. Add in whatever flavor nuances you feel compelled to add.
Bottom line, I can’t express adequately how impressed I am with Old Forrester as a brand and am looking forward to trying more of their products.
I would definitely buy more of the OF1924 but not at $220+.

Decided to revisit the Larceny BP A124 as the bottle was still on my counter. Here’s my notes.
Nose - bright, sweet spice, light vanilla, like I read in another review hints of a Snickers bar.
Palate - immediate hit of the spice up front, tingles the tongue, marshmallow, light oak, drying.
Finish - seemed short on the first couple of sips, then builds and lingers as you sip more. Drinks it’s proof, but doesn’t have a big bite.
For the second pour, I really enjoyed it. On a scale of 1-10, I’d give it a solid 6.6. Not great, but worth picking up if you’re a fan of Larceny BP.

They did a special release of single barrels back in 2020 and it was at the time the best rye I had ever tasted, a year later I did a tour/tasting at Jack and we tried the regular rye, I asked if it was the same stuff as the LE and he said "Hell no. Well technically yes it's the same mashbill, but that release was something special." After a couple years of people begging for it to come back they finally started releasing a shelfer and doing a small amount of barrel picks for it, I tried the last of my LE bottle against a different store's pick last week and the 2020 still topped but both were damn good, I've heard some new single barrels are on par with the original

I stopped buying the barrel proof single barrel picks because they were all over the map, James. Now I look for stores that have a bar or samples to try a OFSBBS pick before I buy.

Looked on base to see if there was anything interesting, but there wasn't much. They did have a full stock of OGD 114 for the first time in over a year, so I grabbed two bottles. At $28, I can't pass it up.
Anyone have any thoughts on Stranahan? I always see it in the stores but haven't grabbed any as yet.

This one?
I've only tried one or two Holladay bottles and liked them, there's going to be a cool release coming out soon called the "18 barrel blend" that a friend had a part in creating, he's been saying we all need to load up since it's something special but we'll see, I think it's going to be around $100 which is around the point I like to try before I buy
I wasn't going to but a friend ended up talking me into it, they sold through 200 bottles at the distillery last weekend then about 1700 on the online presale yesterday, should be about 1000 left for the general sale tomorrow. Wish I knew you wanted it I would have passed along the presale info, it took most of the day to sell out and while the general will probably end up selling out, I bet it will be attainable if you're online whenever they go live

The ECBP March Madness tournament has come to an end. Overall my three favorites in order were C919, B519 and A120, but using the full group of 12 the overall favorite was A119 followed by C919 and A120 (B519 came in 5th with the group). My least favorite were A122, A123 and B521 while the group had A123, A121 and B521 on the bottom.
I went into this whole thing thinking C919 and A120 were my favorites but the majority of the people expected B520 to come out on top, it ended up 4th from the bottom. Funny enough I tried to avoid guessing batches but for one I wrote down "B520?" and it ended up being that one, but compared to other batches it isn't as rounded. That was the first barrel proof bourbon I tried that made things click and put the grease on the slope so it'll always be a winner to me :tu

Cracked it about an hour ago. Neck pour, so take it for what that means. It’s pretty darn good. Very pleasant/strong nose. The standard vanilla/caramel on the palate, but there’s a taste of like a cherry cola mixed with a rock n rye. For ~$55, it’s worth picking up.
The same store had two bottles of the Thomas H Handy Sazerac Rye for $799/ea. Yeehaw!

Whoa!!!!! Nice markup on that!!!! I got mine for $179. But the Bookers I’ve been buying are marked up I think anywhere from 50% - 100% over MSRP. And the last buy had an option for a tip. No comments on the tip or I would have said use 25% of your 100% markup for the tip.

I’ve seen it locally, but not at my regular B&M. Waiting for them to get it before I buy. Glad to see your quick review. Sometimes it’s not all about the proof or age. Too many people forget that the age statement is what is the youngest age in the bottle. Could be one drop, could be 99%. As long as it tastes good is what counts.

Nice grab! OFBB can be anywhere from "ok" to "dang that's delicious," I've tried a few years but the only one I've ever ended up with a bottle of is 2020 which in my opinions was a "just ok" year. Just grabbed a Ben Holladay BiB. Same store had some surprising things out on the shelves. Blantons, Bookers (2023), A Midwinters Nights Dram, JD10/12. Of course, insane prices.

Yea, me too. Most things were $50 over SRP. :fp
Did hit up my local store to give a fiver to one of the managers. Grabbed the first bottle of Buffaloe Trace SP and a 1792 FP.

Tried 1792 Sweet Wheat while out for dinner with QT. Then had a second pour of the same. Very different from a lot of the wheated bourbons I've tried, I'll be on the lookout for a bottle.'

Stopped by my local store to see what they had new. BT store pick for $30, don’t mind if I do. ECBP A124 for $75, yes please. Also grabbed a New Riff single barrel. Will be cracking that one open in a bit.

I opened the new Booker's (24-01 Springfield batch) last night. I give the Booker's at least 3 weeks open before I really evaluate them, but my first impressions of this aren't great. While it has a great nose, the palate is kind of ordinary (nothing special), and there is something off-putting to me on the finish. I can't put my finger on the offending flavor. I'll try it again in June and see how it grabs me then.

Oh boy. This is what happens when a professional with a superior palate shows up. Just more proof that my palate is not that good hah. But on the plus side, less is off putting. Ethanol bite I don’t care for. This one was smooth on that front.
Can’t wait to here more of your thoughts as it opens up.

My sister in-law and her husband were in St. Augustine today and stumbled upon St. Augustine Distilling Co., which I'd never heard of. They took a tour and did some samples. The bourbons are apparently pretty tasty, especially their barrel-proof, "The Saint". They offered to grab me a bottle, but it was $200 and there's no way I'm shelling that out without tasting it first myself.

I poured some of the Still Austin Cask Strength tonight. It smells great; one of the more complex aromas I've encountered in a while. I get cherry, butter, and raisin in one whiff, then cinnamon and vanilla the next. The taste is more fruit, caramel, and some spiciness from the rye, along with something that's almost creamy that I can't quite pinpoint. At around $60-ish a bottle, I'll definitely grab more of these.

Damn you James! I’ve seen the Still Austin, but wasn’t sure since Texas juice gets a bad rap. Between your review and a couple others I’ve seen online, I might need to pick it up.
Was grocery shopping at a big chain store in my area. Went into the liquor section to see sparse shelves. The lady who stocks that area was in going thru stock. Said hello like I always do when I see her. She says, “Looking for Blantons?”. Really wasn’t, but since I nearly killed a bottle last night. And at msrp, sure. And the stopper is a letter (S) that I didn’t have.

One of our local chains has a single barrel Still Austin CS, James. I tried a pour a couple months ago and ended up buying a bottle on the spot.
Bob, you can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you get Blanton's. :D
Opened a bottle of one of my favorite Elijah Craig BP batches, B620.

Bought this 14 Year Rare Perfection a couple weeks ago. Opened it last night.... kind of different for a non finished bourbon. Sweet on the palate, but a short dry finish. I haven't decided if I like it or not yet. :lr

Isn't that stuff Canadian? Checks out based on your review
My FIL picked up a bottle of that Traveller whiskey when he was here and wanted to leave it with me, it's not terrible so long as you know you're getting sweet boring Canadian whisky (although it allegedly has Barton blended into it). I'd take a half decent 'Berta Rye over anything else coming out of that country :sl

I'm with you on the rye, Ben.
It's distilled in Bardstown KY, same one that bottles Olde St. Nick. But yeah, it compares to a lower proof light whiskey

Had a little fun yesterday. Did a blind tasting of last years Bookers releases. Idk if my palate is completely screwed, but they all tasted the same to me. The musty peanut funk was pretty much all I could taste. Keep saying I’m going to lay off the cigars for a bit, but here I am smoking one in the garage.

Crazy, Bob.
I would rate the 23-01 (Charlie's) as maybe the best batch since 2020, and I would rate 23-02 (Apprentice) as the absolute worst Booker's batch ever.
So is it your palate, or is it mine? ;) :lr

Managed to grab a couple of EHT bottles yesterday: A bottle of Single Barrel and Small Batch. There is a local Discord server that is dedicated to the local bourbon drops. Once word gets on there, it is a mad rush for those members to get to whichever store is mentioned to buy up all of the allocation drops. They are making bourbon hunting not so much fun anymore.

I missed the chance to try Charlie’s Batch :(
Apprentice batch I’m not a fan of as it’s heavy on the ethanol bite. Working my way through my one and last bottle of that.
23-03 I believe is the Mighty Small Batch and that one I love.
23-04 I’ve not tried but I may pick it up next month. Maybe. It’s marked up of course and I’ve over spent this month. Not a priority at this point. I’m also not hearing from Icehog and others great things so hard to justify over say an Elijah Craig bottle that is better priced and seems well talked about. The A124 that is.

Might Fine batch is pretty solid, Dave.
I agree with you on Apprentice, one and done.
I'll revisit 24-01 (Springfield) in another week or so, I always like to give them 3 weeks open. Initially, I was not impressed. Not Apprentice bad, but not great.
Charlie's batch is probably my favorite since Granny's (20-01).
