Pappy
Basil Haydens
Rock Hill Farms

Your telling me! I have a bottle each of the Antique Collection on hold for me when they come.

I also just picked up a bottle of Four Roses Mariage and a bottle of their 120th Anniversary, both of which I have yet to crack open and try, but I'm looking forward to.

Well, I once again fell into the "rare bourbon hole". I went to the liquor store with the wife to get a bottle of vodka for her (she ended up wanting the Donald Trump vodka because "it has a pretty gold bottle"). Walking up to check out I passed through the bourbon section and saw they had a few bottles of Four Roses Mariage left. Needless to say I picked some up to hang out with my Four Roses 120th in the cabinet. I'll let you all know how it is in a few days.

Call me a lush, but I always enjoy Knob Creek. It packs a little heat at 100 proof, but it just has that special twang that always brings me back. Other favorites of mine are Bakers, Woodford Reserve, and Eagle Rare.

I'm new to the bourbon game. I've only tried Maker's Mark (It was a Halloween party and I was too sauced to taste any of it), Jim Beam (No thanks), and Wild Turkey Rare Breed. The Rare Breed, at 108.2 proof was a bit too strong to sip straight, but mix it with a coke zero and you've got my new favorite mixed drink. What would you recommend for me to try for under $40? I'd like to pick up a bottle on payday next week, and I want to try something new, but I'm in school, paying off a car, and trying to only work 25 hours a week, so it really can't break the bank. Any suggestions?

Went to the liquor store yesterday, and between the Woodford Reserve and the Bulleit I couldn't decide. I let the $8 difference in price dictate, so I grabbed the bottle of Bulleit. Luckily, at the register they had a few of the 50ml bottles of Woodford so I bought 2 of them. My roommmate grabbed a fifth of Fighting ****. After an extensive tasting ceremony, I've decided I like the Bulleit better with a coke, as it's got a bit more burn. The Woodford had a sweet character, and I thought I tasted some vanilla/caramel (Although with liquor I have virtually no palate. I'm not accustomed enough to the alcohol burn yet to detect more delicate flavors like I can with cigars). I've decided that Woodford Reserve has officially become my new sipping liquor (The only one, I might add, that isn't a tequila), but I didn't like it in the Coke, as the sweetness was lost in the mix. That fighting **** is some savage stuff. It had a serious burn, which I like for mixing in a coke. Next on my try list is Knob Creek, and when I sell my books back at the end of the quarter, I'll grab a bottle of Booker's to bring in the Winter break right. This is really cool, as I've never been a huge whiskey fan, but I'm really starting to enjoy this Bourbon game. Any other recommendations for sub $50 fifths worth trying?

One great thing about bourbon, besides bleeding from the rolling hills in the bluegrass, is that there is a selection of good bottles for just one $20.

I wish I had more people around me that liked bourbon so we could do blind tastings. :(

I really like where your palate is headed. The woodford is a bourbon i would never mix, only sip. The bulleit is not bad for sipping, but not so good i wouldn't feel bad mixing it. Keep the fighting ck for giving to people who just want to get drunk. The knob creek and bookers are excellent to sip, just add one or two ice cubes to cut the high alcohol levels. you are on yet another wonderful slope.:tu

Two cheaper bourbons that are really good for the price are Evan Williams Single Barrel and Buffalo Trace. Both can be had for under $25 a fifth. They are good enough to drink straight and still keep enough to mix if you feel like it. For a bit more ~$40, I'd recommend Old Forrester Birthday Bourbon. Harder to find, but a great bourbon. Its aged 13 years, so it is a great whiskey, but still not too old were the price gets astronomical.

I just cracked open a bottle of Evan Williams Single Barrel 1998. I'm usually a rum drinker (this and Booker's are the only bourbon I've got), but this was a darn good bottle of booze. The nose reminded me a little of sum of my rums, was just a little sweet, very smooth (one ice cube), good combination of caramel and wood flavors. I'm a fan.

Although, a few of theses are not bourbons, I found this to be interesting. I found it while surfing. It's a list of the top ten whiskey's that everyone should try!

I have had #9 and #10 and loved them both! I have not tried any of the others. Have you tried any of these?

#10 - Wild Turkey American Honey. If your throat’s burning and you’re craving something sweet, try this honey-laced bourbon from Lawrenceburg, Kentucky. Ashley Judd not included.

#9 - Dalwhinnie 15 years old. Scottish single malt, considered one of the “Six Classic Malts,” originating in the Highlands. Treat it respectfully or risk getting your head cut off by a Frenchman with a Japanese sword and faking a Scottish accent. (There can be only one!)

#8 - Jameson Rarest Vintage Reserve. Regular Jameson on steroids, metaphorically speaking. Only 1,300 3-liter cases came out for the first vintage, which means you had an easier time getting the first copy of the last Harry Potter book.

#7 – Nikka Yoichi 20 years old. So it’s not from Ireland or Scotland. Japan’s an island, too, and in a 2003 blind taste test, this Asian single malt gave the Gaels one in the eye.

#6 - Suntory Hibiki 30 years old. Yet another entry from the Land of the Rising Sun, this whisky was declared the “World’s Best Blended Whisky” at the 2008 World Whiskies Awards. Boy, first it was cars, now it’s booze?

# 5 - Compass Box Hedonism. Winner of the 2008 “World’s Best Grain Whisky” award from Whisky Magazine. Made in Scotland by an American. Sip it respectfully, watch a Sean Connery Bond film, and chant “USA! USA!”

#4 - Glenrothes 25 years old. Another limited edition single malt, though with 2,400 bottles released upon an unsuspecting world, you may want to ask Glenrothes if they really know what “limited” means. Each bottle of this whisky contains spirits distilled in 1967, 1972, 1977, 1979, and 1980. Guess that’s what’s really going on when you save time in a bottle.

#3 - Blue Hanger 30 years old. The name has nothing to do with Joan Crawford’s closet fetishes and everything to do with an 18th century whisky lover who liked to wear blue. Gee. Suddenly all those frequent customer points seem so hollow, don’t they?

#2 - Glenfiddich 40-year-old. Only 600 bottles were filled from the casks first laid down in 1963. If you have to ask the price, you probably can’t afford it. It’s earned enough gold medals to be served to Michael Phelps.

#1 - George T. Stagg. The pride of Buffalo Trace Distillery of Frankfurt, Kentucky. You can’t go wrong with a Bluegrass state bourbon, and if you’re willing to plunk down the bucks, George T. Stagg deserves a place on your rack.

Not sure how this list wass put together as it is all over the map. The Dalwhinnie 15 is definitely good but there are plenty of other scotch whiskies at the same price point I would choose over this one. The Compass Box Hedonism is very good and worthy of trying. I don't think it is worthy of the asking price but definitely something interesting to try. The George T Stagg is an exceptional bourbon and one of my favorites. Each year Buffalo Trace releases a new George T Stagg around this time of the year. The sell quick so go buy NOW! It is straight from the barrel, unfiltered (YUMMY) and hovers around 140 proof depending on the year. Others that BT release each year are William Larue Weller (wheated bourbon = YUMMY) and Thomas Handy (straight rye, barrel proof & unfiltered = REAL YUMMY). I would buy all three of these for sure!!!

I'm with you and would add Eagle Rare are all great reasonably priced bourbons. I would add for mixing I keep a regular bottle of Evan Williams around. Best Bourbon and Coke I know of. Even better than using the Single Barrel partly because the EWSB & Coke gets to sweet and the nuances are lost anyway. Save the 6-7 bucks and mix the regular. We used take EW in a flask and mix it with & Coke at Hockey games. ahh I need season tickets again. I digress.

There is one that I've hesitated to mention, as it is not available in the USA. However, it is excellent, very reasonably priced. A BOTL that I was trading with and did a couple of buys for from Canada, picked up a bottle for me, as well as a bottle of "Havana Club 7". It's a 10 yo "Alberta Springs". At 40%/80 proof, it's a very smooth, very complex, easy going bourbon, and has distinct honey nuances. In fact, I am almost done with my second bottle, and I no longer have the contact that I had. I hope to make a connection with another BOTL from Canada, for a trade, etc.

HHHMMMM, I have seen the 7 on the shelves, but have never tried it. I will have to look the next time I am in the store and perhaps try a bottle.
So far, I have not tried that many bourbons (considering most go $40 plus up here), but my favorite is Buffalo Trace.

And Alberta Springs is the bar standard around these parts :). We tend to go for the Crown Royal if we want something a little higher end for the ol' rye and coke (at least in my little corner of the woods)[and I guess it is technically not a bourbon, it is a rye]

I agree 100 . I can get a fifth of black label EW for $11. It makes a fne Boubon and coke. The EWSB ( I am enjoying one right now) is great on its own.

Did you also know tat in 1964 when LBJ was in office, Bourbon was declared " A distinctive prodct of the US" and was recognized by Congress as "America's Native Spirit".

$50 is a great price for any of the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection bottles. Go get the William Larue Weller and the Thomas Handy rye if they still have them. These 3 are must haves. Each is straight from the barrel, barrel proof and unfiltered.

Pass on the Pappy Van Winle 20. $100 isn't that great of a price and you are better off buying the Pappy 15 year. The 20 is over-oaked (to long in the barrel) in my opinion. Just my :2

$50 is a great price for the Stagg. I've never seen it under $75 a bottle and it is often over $100. At that price its pry worth buying all that they have. Either drink em yourself, or give em away as gifts. I'm sure most on here will agree, a fine bottle of bourbon makes a great present.

I happen to like the standard 80 proof Four Roses, from time to time. For me, it's a very light whiskey or Bourbon, that's far too easy to drink! It offers distinct nuances of honey and a consistent light spiciness. It's very drinkable! The Four Roses Single Barrel 86 proof and the 15yo 104 proof Barrel Strength are much different!

Rittenhouse Rye - Bottled in Bond

http://www.shoppersvineyard.com/product_new.asp?pID=32192

http://www.fototime.com/1E471DDEEFA78A6/standard.jpg

A little info about Bottled in Bond:

To be labeled as "Bottled-in-Bond" or "Bonded," the whiskey must be straight whiskey that is the product of one distillation season and one distiller at one distillery. It must have been stored (i.e., aged) in a federally bonded warehouse under U.S. government supervision for at least four years and bottled at 100 (U.S.) proof (50% alcohol by volume). The bottled product's label must identify the distillery (by DSP number) where it was distilled and, if different, where it was bottled.

I thought other bourbon lovers would enjoy this as much as I did....

Bourbon's Beauty: An ode to a distinctly American drink
(Newsweek)--In light of the recent 75th anniversary of the repeal of prohibition, it seems appropriate-and not just a little necessary, since we are also in the midst of an especially fraught holiday season-to meditate on America's great contribution to the world of spirits, bourbon whiskey. First produced in the late 18th century in the "Old Bourbon" region of Kentucky, bourbon was recognized in 1964 as "a distinct product of America" by Congress, which also laid out the "Federal Standards of Identity." It must be made of a grain mixture that is at least 51 percent corn, distilled in America at less than 160 proof with nothing added but water, and aged for a minimum of two years in new, charred-oak barrels.
George Washington distilled bourbon at Mount Vernon, Abraham Lincoln's father was a seasonal distillery hand, and Lincoln's General-in-Chief, Ulysses S. Grant, was a dedicated consumer of bourbon.
The novelist Walker Percy wrote an oft-reprinted essay in praise of the stuff, but he was no connoisseur, since, like me, he spent the bulk of his early life in Mississippi, which remained dry until 1966.
Consequently, we were able to avail ourselves only of the brands the local bootlegger had on offer, which, in the case of bourbon, was generally Old Crow- a favorite of Grant, Mark Twain, and our postman, for whom my mother left a bottle in the mailbox every Christmas.
Percy preferred Early Times-in his "Love in the Ruins," the protagonist holes up in an abandoned Howard Johnson's with 15 cases of it, along with three good-looking women and the world's great books-mainly, he said, because at 80 proof he could drink more of it. Percy would likely be amused at today's profusion of artisanal-style "small batch" bourbons, brands like Blanton's Single Barrel, Woodford Reserve, and Eagle Rare. Crafted by "master distillers," they recall bourbon's heyday at the opening of the 20th century, when almost 200 hundred brands of straight bourbon, each with very distinct characteristics, vied for drinkers' approval.
Bourbon's individuality comes from the quality of the oak barrels in which it is aged and the environment in which they are stored, as well as the length of aging and final strength. The resulting range of nuances can be so varied that a tasting vocabulary not unlike that which is ordinarily reserved for fine wine is often used to describe them. Percy happily settled for "the little explosion of Kentucky U.S.A. sunshine in the cavity of the nasophayrnx," but were he alive to drink, say, a 16-year-old A.H.
Hirsh Reserve, he might have also detected, as one critic did, "smoky, floral aromas" and flavors of "fruit and chocolate." Likewise, Evan Williams Single Barrel Vintage 1998 is said to boast aromas of "brown banana, cloves, and glove leather," while 12-year-old W.L. Weller has a "complex and toasty palate" and a "sweet and okay" finish.
A life-long Scotch drinker, I have never shared the tendency of my fellow Southerners toward American whiskey (Percy said drinking Scotch was like looking at a picture of Noel Coward; Faulkner said if forced to choose between Scotch and nothing, he'd take Scotch). But some of the small batch brands have finally made me a believer, and I'm not alone: since 2002, sales of super-premium bourbons (those costing more than $30) have risen by more than 60 percent. My favorite, 20-year-old Pappy van Winkle's Family Reserve, is as suave and rich as a fine brandy-and, at about $100, as expensive. But for less than half the money, I am also happy to sip, neat or on the rocks, Knob Creek or Basil Hayden's-both Jim Beam brands. (I think the real reason I abjured bourbon for so long was that so many drinkers of my generation inevitably mixed it with Coke.)
Though I have come late to drinking bourbon, I have long understood the benefits of cooking with it. Bourbon balls (a mixture of crushed vanilla wafers, chopped pecans, corn syrup, bourbon, powdered sugar, and sometimes cocoa) are a traditional Christmas treat, and my mother always puts a healthy dose of bourbon in her holiday charlotte russe. My friend Robert Carter at Charleston's Peninsula Grill features bourbon-grilled shrimp with creamed-corn sauce, Hoppin John and green-onion hushpuppies on his menu, and at Birmingham's excellent Hot and Hot Fish Club, Chris and Idie Hastings offer up a sublime toddy made with fig-infused bourbon over ice and garnished with a bourbon-soaked fig.
In these trying times, bourbon, with or without the fig, is a wholly American and appropriate indulgence. Percy would approve. Dr. Tom More, his character who took refuge with the Early Times, was doing so because in the "dread latter days of the old violent beloved U.S.A.", pure "wickedness" abounded in "high places" and all hell had broken loose; he was anticipating nothing less than the end of the world. If that scenario sounds scarily familiar, take heart. At the novel's end, not only is the world still in tact, but More has married the best of the three women and is outside on his patio, merrily barbecuing a turkey on Christmas Eve. His accompaniments are the songs of Sinatra and several restorative shots of bourbon. There are worse remedies.

I found 1 bottle of that Old Fitz at some hole in the wall last winter. When I finished it, i went back for more and they were out. Ihave not seen it since. Are they still producing this?

Old Fitzgerald is still produced unless something recently changed. I couldn't image that brand being discontinued.

Its nice to see so many folks at CA that find enjoyment in some of this life's best value and quality products. "Bourbon". When sitting back and enjoying a cigar with friends I find myself pouring Gentlemen Jack in my glass more than anything else. Its not the best by any means but I simply love the smoothness of it.

Like everything else we all have our favorites. Rare Breed,Buf Trace, Knob Creek,Elijah Craig,EW single barrel among others are staples in these parts. Booker's and Pappy 15 year old when I got the dough for em.

I cracked this one open last night. Really nice presentation commemorating the end of prohibition. The bourbon was decent, nothing to go crazy over. But a pretty cool set nonetheless. Pretty hard to find around these parts, but there's always eBay ;) The Old Forester Birthday Batch is a way better bourbon if you can find that one.

Etched Bourbon Glass
Copy of the Amendment to the Constitution which repealed the sale of Alcohol in the United States

I have decided to clean out some of my Bourbon Stash, as I will never be able to dink them all in my life time, and I am always looking to try, new to me, Bourbons & Whiskey as well!

I have the following for sale, and will be posting more from time to time. PM me if you have any interest.

I’ll be happy to post additional pictures if requested.

Jim Beam 10yo Kentucky Straight Bourbon/Whiskey – 750ml, 40% alc/vol, 80 proof.

This is a Collector Decanter, featuring a reproduction of a painting by J. Lockhart. They are impossible to find in any retail setting. I believe these were produced in the 1970’s. This bottle is in mint condition and is sealed, never opened.

It’s almost impossible to find any reviews on this 10yo Jim Beam, as it was only used in their various Collectible Decanter Series. All I can say, is that it is far superior to the standard Jim Beam and even the 5yo Jim Beam. I have been through two of these over the years and as I recall, the flavor profile is distinctly that of dark fruits, apricot & raisins, just like fruitcake!

My price is $35.00 plus $15 for insured S&H, via USPS, within the Con. USA.

Early Times Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whisky – 750ml, 43% alc/vol, 86 proof.

This is a Collector’s Bicentennial Limited Edition 1776-1976 Decanter, dedicated to the state of Illinois. They were very limited and are now impossible to find in any retail setting. These were produced in 1975, in preparation for the 1976 Bicentennial Celebration. This bottle is in mint condition and is sealed, never opened.

My price is $35.00 plus $15.00 for insured S&H, via USPS, within the Con. USA.

Seagram’s Crown Royal Blended Canadian Whiskey – 750ml, 40% alc/vol, 80 proof.

When this was my go to whisky, many years ago, I purchased several cases for my cellar. The tax stamp is dated 1969. This bottle is in mint condition and is sealed, never opened. Little needs to be said about how great a whiskey this is. Of course taste is very subjective, and if you are not a fan, that’s understandable, however, this is truly an amazing whiskey, at a truly reasonable price. This bottle is over 40 year old.

My price is $50.00 plus $15.00 for insured S&H, via USPS, within the Con. USA.

However, If your looking for smooth, I highly recommend the following:

Everything from Ancient Age to George T Stagg to Pappy Family Reserve. I have a bottle of Bourbon that Bobarian gave me for Christmas. How are you supposed to drink this stuff?

BengalMan
02-27-2009, 09:19 PM
Bourbon is best drank IMO with one ice cube per shot. I've found that while drinking it straight without ice will give you a great flavor profile, adding an ice cube per ounce really brings the flavors out.

I don't think it's for me. I had some with some ice. The fire from it almost shut my throat down. :r

I just cant understand some of the bourbon selections in here. Different strokes for different folks. I lived in Central KY for 14 years and have been to almost every distillery in the area. My favorites are:

Four Roses Single Barrel
Evan Williams Single Barrel Vintage
1792 Barrel Select

And I know a few master distillers personally. There are secrets in the bourbon industry!

Try diluting it slightly. Use Spring Water, not tap water, as it has chlorine in it. Buy some spring water, about a buck for a gallon. Place some water in the frig and wait a few hours so it get nice and cold. Mix it at one shot of booze to 1/2 shot of cold Spring Water (no ice).Let it set for a minute or two and then try sipping it. The water will open up the flavors slightly and should dilute the alcohol enough to stop any real bite from it.

If that doesn't work for you, then bourbon may not be your thing. Using more water will only ruin a true bourbon experience.

BTW what is the proof of the bourbon your trying to drink?

Your right, everyone likes different things. Me personally, I'm not very much a fan of the Evan Williams or the 1792. I think they're ok, but there are plenty others that I'd grab for before those.

I dont know how to make it much clearer. I guess I was just surprised at certain bourbons that were listed and others I did not see pop up too often. And I dont just mean the ones I listed because those were listed a couple times. Not saying it is a bad thing..I think it is great that different people enjoy different bourbons...same thing for cigars! I happen to like most bourbons, just some more than others.

Happy drinking and happy smoking!

Different strokes for different folks is exactly what I thought after reading this post. Of his list of favorites, the only one I like is the Four Roses SB, which is quite good. Of course, there is an extensive list of other bourbons I would take over Four Roses.

I don't want to make this into a big thing either. But I am still not sure what you mean by your comment and I don't think it is clear at all.

Which Bourbons in particular suprise you? Eagle Rare, Stagg, Knob Creek, or something else? What surprises you about these or others? their price, their
availability, their taste? And these secrets? If you have insider knowledge about the bourbon industry that's great, but why elude to it here without some expectation of curiousity?

I just feel to throw a statement out there in this thread caused a least two members to say huh?

Ok I guess I am more suprised by what I did not see or see very often to include:

Old Weller
Elijah Craig SB
Hancocks Reserve
Jefferson Reserve
Old Rip Van Winkle
Blantons
Bookers

Also as far as secrets if you drink certain "premium" bourbons next to certain "cheap" bourbons, you will see how eerily similar they taste.

I always thought that bourbon barrels that fit a particular taste profile are bottled accordingly and that there are a number of different brands that can come from the same stock. Usually the honey barrels would go to the premium brands. Of course this is what I have come to understand but please inform me if this is incorrect...

As I recall Rittenhouse is a Rye Whisky not a Bourbon. I think I did have it once or twice, the 100 proof bottling, but I don't recall very much about it. That had to be in the late 1980's or early 1990's. I am not sure how many different bottling's there are. I'll have to check it out.

As far as straight Rye's go, it's hard to beat the Van Winkle 13yo Family Reserve but it's a little pricey. I think it sells in the $40+ range but I'm not sure right now. I just opened a bottle yesterday and I still have another sealed bottle left. I had purchased a case back in the late 1980's. It has always been my favorite straight Rye Whiskey.

Yes...many on this board seem to think several different types of whiskey are bourbon. This wiki article tells what makes a bourbon a bourbon http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bourbon_whiskey

Yes, I know it is not a Bourbon, the only reason I mentioned it is that you have several Ryes on your list and Rittenhouse was not on it.

Just got back from The Party Source. Picked up Elijah Craig 18, Russell's Reserve Rye, and a bottle of Reyka vodka. I know this is a bourbon thread, and I started it, lol, but if any of you enjoy the occasional vodka martini or vodka straight up or the wife enjoys vodka, Reyka is THE vodka to get. It's hands down the BEST vodka I've had to date. It's so smooth it's scary. Anyways, I'm off to have a cigar and some Russell's Rye.
