Given that any "deal" is a fixed number sold until out of stock, I suspect they won't lose more than the "sale" list was supposed to run. And remember that at least 25% of that price is profit probably anyway. so they aren't losing as much.

Amazingly dishonorable behavior on behalf of some folks who claim to conduct themselves in an honorable manner. Exploiting a programming error is no different than just going in and stealing this stuff from your local b&m. I suspect that many here also would jump the cashier at Walmart is she made a 5 cent error in favor of the store while making your change. I wish that I had seen this while it was ongoing and said something at that time.:fl

While I doubt that would be the case, if it were it seems they would have put a cap on how many of each offer you could place an order for. They get the same traffic from selling one bundle of 10 to one customer that they do for five.

neoflex
12-11-2008, 06:56 AM
I think it was a programming mistake and it went on for as long as it did because of the hours of the night that it was live. I bet someone was called and woken up in the middle of the night to fix the error. If it were a scheme to create traffic they would have pulled the stunt during daytime hours IMHO.
I too am surprised at how many tried to take advantage of the deals and seem to have gone nuts. Even if it were legit and CI was feeling generous, have some self control and put in orders for realistic sized orders. I'm Sure I may take some abuse for that statements but I just had to express my feelings on the situation.

For the record I joked about ordering 75 units of Gurkhas, but did not really order them. I don't Gurkhas it was a joke to a few people that know me that were posting in the thread. I actually only order 2 moni tins, because I figured that they will either cancel my order or change the price and send my sticks. I know some of you are mad that people were placing orders like crazy, but I honestly believe that none of us, who saw this going on, actually believed that the orders will be filled for free.

It was just funny to see big ol' CI, the bane of many small B&M's, offering sticks for free. I mean it was already difficult for my local B&M to compete with CI's prices, but CI offering sticks for free is just impossible to compete with now.:D

Wow... the morning crowd is so disapproving of our shenanigans.

FWIW, that's all this was for me: Shenanigans.

Did I place an order? Yes, a couple in fact.

Do I honestly expect them to send me the sticks? Absolutely not.

I don't think anyone honestly expects CI to honor this deal. This was a prank, a lark, a game to amuse those who were here. Although it would be hysterical if the 4,000 sticks of a cigar someone claims to hate actually showed up at their door.

I hear and understand the opinions, concerns, and criticisms of our behavior last night. However, if I'd had a concern like this, I would have approached the people I consider friends and acquaintances via PM to discuss the questionable behavior. What I would not have done is climb up on a soapbox and call strangers looters and thieves with no further insight into their actions than a thread of random commentary.

Congratulations, you've officially taken all the fun out of this little game.

My only question is, If it was just a game and for fun and never expected to receive any of your orders, than why did you place them? I like free stuff like the next guy but I think some who admitted to participating went over board and now that they are being called out are trying to baby face it. Whats wrong with doing it for fun, hoping that the order would be shipped..... but not expecting it to be? In the world of buyer beware shouldn't the reverse also work.... retailer beware?

If you think about it.... this is a golden opportunity for CI to really EARN some really loyal customers... if they decide they should honor the deals then I would suspect it would lead some people to order even more from them in the future, and a TON of free advertising across the magical internet box....

Exactly. Good harmless fun, please. And if it was a game, very nice - I'm sure CI appreciates it while they're busy trying to sort out the mess, keep from shipping free orders and still fulfill orders for people who actually paid for theirs.

As far as soapboxing, if pointing out unethical behavior (or in the case of a "game", poor judgement) is labeled as being on a soapbox so be it, but it looks more like you're trying to deflect attention rather than take responsibility for your behavior. :2

Yes it was fun and games, and did we hope that the orders would be shipped? Sure. Do we believe that it was going to happen? No way.

We placed them, we joked about bombing our friends. We joked about opening up a b&M that only sold bundles. We had a laugh, and I think it is uncalled for to imply that the people that enjoyed ordering on obscene amount of cigars they didnt want "theives". Though personally not offended (we all steal in some capacity) I take great offense for my friends who are far from reprehensible and do not deserve such slander in an open thread.

Just an FYI, if it is clear that the customer recognized their was an error, and intended to benefit from such error; CI wouldn't legally be required to fulfill the order. That said, it would be incumbent on the customer to either admit it, or the vendor to prove it.

As far as anyone who frowns upon people buying these incorrect orders, I point out to you: Caveat venditor (in name, not in practiced law). In other words, seller assumes responsibility for the orders and anything posted on their website. They are just as responsible for what's on their site as are people who post objectionable or questionable material.

There is nothing wrong with people taking up a deal, even knowing that it will probably not be honored. There IS something wrong with people judging others over it, even if they were to keep that fortune to themselves. And judging someone, were anyone to give any such hypothetical sales to the troops, is as pointless as it is spiteful. A purely altruistic gesture to give one's fortune onto others, without taking for themselves, is as generous as it gets. Speaking of not acting in the fashion of a BOTL, one who judges others actions so publicly and harshly is not at all acting in any good spirit.

At any rate, I for one received my emails this morning notifying me that a computer glitch caused incorrect prices, and a new confirmation with correct prices was attached, notifying me that if I didn't respond with acceptance within 48 hours, it would be automatically canceled.

We are all entitled to our opinions however they swing, and I feel that if the company honors the mistake, good for them. If they don't, oh well, it's not a loss to anyone else. The website is fixed, emails have been sent regarding the situation and the option to actually buy the deals at the correct price or decline. No one will apparently get anything free.

How is stating an opinion about someone's actions judging that person? I often hear this complaint, but I didn't see any personal remarks or comments made about individual members, just about the ethics of the activity.

And IMO, there's nothing altruistic about donating goods that were acquired through a mistake of and at great expense to a merchant.

For all those on their soap boxes, I would like to thank you all for being morally superior to the rest of us. It is nice to know in this day and age we still have saints who never ever do anything wrong in anyone else’s eyes. Today I spend a good chunk of my day saving someone his job. In comparison to ordering one pack of partagas black late last night I think I might just be even. The problem with judging people, especially on a forum, is that without knowing the person you are judging, you are just judging that person but a little piece of information you read. I have learnt not to be so quick to judge on so little.

I wasnot judging the people per say, just the actions. Will I hold a grudge against these people or deem them bad people or ever not buy anything from them in a WTS/Split thread? No, I just think the way the situation was handled was a little ridiculous. Just my opinion, and you know what they say about that? Opinions are like @ssholes. Everyone has one and they all stink.:D Hell, if you only ordered one hoping to score a free bundle maybe but ordering hundreds is a bit overboard and was meant to be more than just a gag. Again, just my .02. For all you know someone could have lost their job over the ordeal. You just never know what your actions may have caused, so because you thought it would be a hoot to order 200 bundles or whatever now someone could possibly be out a job in this "economy?" You never know. I know if I made the mistake at work my boss would hang my n*ts from the flagpole than fire me. Not claiming to be a saint either. Far from it but I guess in some situations I am guilty of thinking about what could result from my foolish actions and every once in awhile putting the shoe on the other foot. Plus I can't be a saint, my wife tells me all the time I am an @zzhole.:ss
This will be my last post on this thread as I think I already ruffled enough feathers and made enough enemys. I joined here to share the love of the leaf and this group reminds me of what CS was 2 years ago, so I will stop now before I piss anyone else off. I guess I was just surprised because I guess I along with a few others are in the minority in thinking that this is not how most BOTL/SOTLs would have handle the situation.
