View Full Version : I have finally found a vodka I like.

I can't drink Absolut, Stoli, Grey Goose, Smirnoff, Russian Standard, Glacier, Ketel One, or Svedka.
I've only been able to drink Polish vodkas with moderate success. Chopin, Belvedere, Luksusowa and just once Siwucha. Of these Luksusowa was best in my book but now it has been replaced. If you like vodka you must buy Sobieski. It's a Polish rye vodka that actually has flavor. At $11 a bottle it's incredibly frugal. Somewhat spicy, sweet after taste and aroma, smooth and warm. Best of all, this is the first vodka I've had that has not given me a hangover. Incredible. Of course, I drank it straight and warm.

I have never even heard of that Vodka, let alone tried it, however, it sounds interesting, and if I can find a bottle this weekend, I'll give it a go!
Like you, except for Ketel One, I do not care for any of the Vodkas you mentioned at the top. Over the last few years, I have come to really like Chopin (about $30), Staraya Moskva (about$20) & the Stolichnaya Gold (about $28)! The Gold is much different than the standard Stoli, offering a lot of spiciness. I also like Ketel One!

I drink my bourbon, tequila and scotch straight. Vodka, on the other hand, is one that I will only drink when mixed. To me, the best vodka is one that has no taste or smell and will dissolve into a mixed drink. My favorites in this category are Tito's and Kettle One. Both are priced extremely reasonable. :al

Taste is very subjective, but even so, you are the first I have ever heard, describe Ketel One as tasteless and void of aroma. Ketel One is kind of my go to Vodka, and I and many others I know, find it to offer a very intense mineral, flowery aroma, with very distinct flavors of smoke & licorice, with a light flowery finish.

These two have done fine for me in mixed drinks which is really the only time I will drink vodka. Me and a bunch of my buddies had a tasting of 18 different vodkas about a year ago. Our tasting was done straight with no ice and at room temperature. Ketel One and Tito's were the two that rose to the top for me over the others I tried which were: Jewel of Russia, Ciroc, Stoli Elite, Grey Goose, Effen, Smirnoff, Imperia, Hangar One, Chopin, Absolut, Belvedere, Blue Ice, Finlandia, Idol, Level, Pravda.
What other vodka would you recommend that is tasteless, reasonably priced and void of aroma?

That's a difficult question, at least for me, because when I sample a vodka for the first time or two and it offers no aroma and is virtually tasteless, I completely put it out of my mind. I prefer to drink vodka over ice or martini style.
I have tried most of the ones used in your tasting, but not all of them. The ones I really like are Jewel of Russia, Chopin, Blue Ice and Hanger One!

If a bar doesn't have any good vodkas, you can always count on it to have a bottle of Grey Goose. It's just fine with soda and makes a potable martini, but it's barely above house vodka with a premium price tag, in my opinion.

I tend to drink Vodka straight on the rocks. That requires a very clean tasting vodka. My favorite in that regard is Belvedere. Many of the others -- even the esteemed Grey Goose -- have an unpleasant harshness and aftertaste.
Hanger One is OK too, as is Chopin. Ketel One is a good vodka, but is better for mixing.
Yeah, just my opinion. Drink what you like.

Mister Moo
12-16-2008, 08:18 AM
As everyone already knows, an honest mootini is made exclusively with gin. When vodka is called into service I favor Russian Standard and Luksusowa, iced hard with lemon twist accent and lemon-rubbed rim. Vodka however is best gulped cold, russian style.
I will try this $11.00 miracle. Might be better than Yerba Mate, Mith'. Thx.

how about Wybrovka?Wyborowa? I like that one, along with the Luksusowa (what I have now). I'm not a vodka connoiseur by any means, but all I know is that these taste good to me, don't cost too much, and that Smirnoff is like gasoline. I've had Ketel One and prefer the Luksusowa.
They don't seem to sell this Sobieski here in BC, but I'll have to try out some of the other brands mentioned here...

I about put a bottle away in one sitting. I liked it! Pretty easy to drink and not too costly. :tu

I'm a Svedka fan. I have definitely tested my sobriety limits and then gone about 10 drinks past that limit and have never, ever once woke up the next morning with the jackhammer crew in my head. I cannot say that about many other quality adult products. Svedka is definitely my Quap of choice.

Thanks for the tips Matt. Yesterday I bought myself a bottle of
Luksusowa (I wanted to try potato vodka). I'm having a frosty glass now while watching the Eagles getting their butts kicked by the Cards.
I left the bottle outside on my porch last night were temps where about zero. Smooth, sweet with a nice spicy finish that's fantastic.
Thanks to your advice I'll be picking up a bottle of Sobieski tomorrow for comparison.
I hope it tastes like Lee Lee Sobieski!:D

I spent about 6 months Warsaw, Poland. Fell in love with a woman and many vodkas. My favorite was from a small distillery. English translation was "Arther's Castle" made in Krakow. It was very expensive. In fact the most expensive my Polish friends had seen at almost $12 US. They all raved about it.
Polish potato vodka goes well with every thing. Cigars, caviar and salmon tartar. Beautiful stuff, smooth, clean with a hint of pepper at the back of the throat that cleanses the pallet while making the mouth water.
Good chiller potato vodka needs something else to really shine. Try it.

I must agree with Icehog3 to each his own!
Grey Goose, Opulent, 3 Olive, Ketel One, and so on are all designer Vodkas. That's not to say that they're bad, hell no, in fact Ketel One is one of my top favs, but they are creations of the modern age.

Stoli for mixing, Goose for shooting, and Jean Marc XO for sipping
It was funny, when you start to drink alot of vodka (college) you really can pick out the differences in the vodka. Well we would have the snotty girls that would only drink "grey goose" even in mixed drinks. They never asked why we had two bottles of goose in the freezer at all times. One was actually goose and the other was filled with Pinnacle... aptly named Pinnagoose.
It was priceless to see those girls take a sip or shot and lick there lips and say "God, I love grey goose". To which all of us would always look at each other with those "I bet you do" eyes.

I'm not a big vodka drinker. I prefer the brown elixirs, but do keep a bottle of Ciroc on hand for the occasional martini. One that I have been meaning to try is a local production:
Vodka 14 (http://www.altitudespirits.com/)
It's not too high on the spirit sampling priority list, but I'll eventually get to it.

True North. It is an amazingly delicious rye vodka. They also have a wheat vodka for $20ish which is great, but I prefer rye vodkas. www.grandtraversedistillery.com

how about Wybrovka?
The only vodka I'll drink is Polish. Wyborowa is good mixer vodka, Wyborowa Exquisite is getting into ok shooting vodka along with Chopin. Belvedere is my vodka of choice for shooting. The only true sipping vodka I've come across is U'Luvka, absolutely zero aftertaste and when over ice it's literally like sipping water.
Going to have to agree with everyone else that Grey Goose is nothing more than barely passable vodka wrapped in massive marketing hype stemming mainly from wannabe ballers and kids that think drinking alcohol begins and ends with JagerBombs. Thank you MTV Cribs for providing the world with yet another high class service :td
Absolut, Stoli, Smirnoff, Finlandia, Russian Prince, etc. are all no better than lighter fluid and completely undrinkable unless I'm already REALLY REALLY drunk first.
For those of you that haven't watched Wodka Wars (http://www.vbs.tv/watch/the-vice-guide-to-travel/wodka-wars) yet, it's well worth the half hour!

Drink what you like, like what you drink.
No one has mentioned Rain.
I really liked this vodka and damn near drank on whole bottle over ice before I realized what I was doing. A good spirit from bourbon masters. I actually bought it to support local business and was very pleased with the purchase.

I couldn't agree more. Just wish the restaurants I go to would stock it.

I recently had a brand from a cigar company called Hammer and Sickle. It tasted like pure rubbing alcohol. :pu
