Standard room humidifier for 2000 + Cabinet

I was wondering if anybody ever used a good standard room humidifier for a large cabinet.

I would never use one of those for a humidifier, to me that just screams mold all over your cigars.

Bob Staebells Set and Forget combined with HCM beads spread throughout. You could get away with just the S&F but not just beads. In a humidor this size i highly reccomend combining active/passive humidification.

There are also the Hydra for up to 16 cubic feet, although never used one personally just trying to give other options, these can be found for a decent price on the web or even the devil site.

No offense Adam, but if you have never used one then you should not recommend it.

Hydra's and Cigar Oasis humidifiers are cheap active humidification. They work, but you get what you pay for and these are the bottom end of active humidification. They use floral foam in their tanks which are prone to mold. The control unit is not very accurate or stable.

You would be better of with Bob Staebell's Set-and-Forget or an Avallo Accumonitor.

And / Or some HCM beads :)

Ah but if I didn't post it I wouldn't have learned that, live and learn, that's the point. So are the Moist n Aire the same with the foam, I thought these used the water cartridge and wick. thanks for the info.

Now I was wondering why is that a good standard humidifier would be a bad idea? Even if I use distilled water? They do have decent filters in them as well. Plus extra fans and beads?

Moist-n-Aire units are archaic but reliable. They are are open tanks, no foam or wicks. They are literally just a stainless steel bucket with a fan that pulls air across the surface of the water. Control is via an off the shelf HVAC humidistat. You dial them in by ignoring the markings on the dial and using a hygrometer elsewhere in the cabinet and going up or down on the dial to get to the point you want. Once you get them dialed in they tend to be pretty stable and maintenance free. Also, a 2000 count humidor might be a bit small for one of them too.

My old Avallo had a similar, predecessor, system. Long before the accumonitor system was designed. Basically a room humidifier with an external/remote controller. They would hide it in this big deep well at the back of the humidor, it worked, but was a total PITA to fill and service.

Newer standard humidifiers have Humistat sensors and digital controls in them. Not sure how accurate they are though...

To add to what I said earlier. Someone on these boards once said "What is the value of your cigars worth to you?"

To me, I'd rather get a humidifier made specifically for cigar humidors, there are a couple great suggestions already in this thread. It would be a real shame if you bought something at Home Depot for your humidor and it ended up not working out and ruining your most prized rares and hard to find cigars.

Bob is very easy to talk to and won't try to just sell you a product. We discussed humidification for over an hour one day, talking back and forth about pros and cons. He'll tell you it straight as his reputation is based on his honesty and amazing quality.
