I love tequila so I though I would create a thread to talk about it...
I like it straight, with lime or mixed with all kinds of things...
Currently I am working on a bottle of Don Eduardo Silver, great stuff!
Any other tequila lovers out there?

I love tequila too. My favorite is Corazon... a night out with the boys isnt complete without tequila.
I prefer mine shaken with ice and strained into a shotglass. One shot, no training wheels necessary.
Corazon can be sipped quite nicely though.
When most people think of tequila they think of that yellow paint thinner in a bottle called cuervo... that stuff is puke

If you guys like Patron Silver, you owe it to yourself to try Casa Noble Crystal, El Tesoro Silver and Los Abuelos Blanco (my favorite). These are my favorite blancos...
For reposados, my favorites are El Tesoro, Clase Azul and Hacienda del la Flor (old tall bottle).
For anejos, my favorites are Don Julio, El Tesoro and Penca Azul.
For extra anejos, my favorites are Don Fulano Imperial (#1 tequila), Jose Cuervo Reserva de la Familia (pre 2005 bottles only), Don Julio 1942 (vanilla bomb) and Arette Gran Classe (hard to find).

Wow, beat me by a few minutes -- I was going to say the same -- Patron is getting to be ridiculously priced -- Casa Noble is usually $15-20 less and a better tequila.
Tenoch is a nice, reasonably priced tequila and comes in a cool stoneware bottle.
I also have some Cuervo Family Reserve that is excellent.

I agree about the agave, but the better anejos to me just have that nice balance between agave and the oaky vanilla flavors that come from the aging. It's just like cigars, plenty of room for different tastes.
Currently enjoying the silver Tequilas, I enjoy thier pure Agave flavor.
Currently in my bar, if thats what you want to call it.

Regular tequila fave is Don Julio Anejo.
If you want to try something different for sipping with a cigar, the Patron XO Cafe is pretty interesting. I have turned several BOTLs onto it and most of them seem to like it with a cigar as well. Sweet taste, not a typical tequila flavor.

My favorites are the Paton and Don Julio Anejo. I was gifted a bottle of Trago Resposado that has a lot of spice and is much drier than the anejo.
I just tried Patron silver last weekend and found it to be a lot harsher in comparison to the anejos.
Would like to hear some recommendations on some nice anejos that are less than Patron/Don Julio if you have any.

I think this stuff is around 500 a bottle. Patron Burdeos - an additional aging step in Bordeaux barrels. If I ever get a new job that has a signing bonus, maybe I will pick up one of these.

Picked up a bottle of Cazadores Reposado in Mexico. Quite sophisticated complex taste that is subtle and quite smooth. We did a horizontal of 6 reposados yesterday and Cazadores was on the top half. Used to drink Patron, Herradura, Tres Generaciones, Azul, before all the new small production, high end tequilas hit CA a few years back. Now you walk into a nicely stocked shop and your heads spins with all the choices. At this point I settled on Partida, fairly new brand, but absolutely unreal in all respects. Reposado or Blanco for me, can't stand the taste of oak in most Anejos.
Best value these days is probably Cazadores Reposado, sells for $30 per liter bottle in CA Costco, hands down the best deal out there, IMO. Smoth and tasty.

Cazadores Reposado is like $20 at the Mexican Naval PX and Don Julio Blanco is $18.
I've never seen Cazadores sold in the US? Not that I looked for it before. White tail deer is Mexico's largest native animal (cover of bottle).

Moses,
Cazadores appeared at CA Costco about 3 years ago, then spread to other liquor shops. $30 per one LITER bottle, like I said, at Costco. At Trader Joe's and others, it is same price but for a 750ml bottle. Reposado was the only version they produced originally, but lately have also released Anejo, which I have not tried yet (I usually dislike most Anejos due to too much oak flavoring). And theirs looks reddish in color so that tells me it is color adjusted as well (same as with most cognacs).
All I can tell you is that tequila selection here in CA is much, much better than that on the Right Coast, but the same can be said about wine as well (when it comes to Left Coast produced wines), not surprising of course. Prices are also much better due to higher competition and availablility.
If you like Cazadores, try Partida, they range from $45-60 (Blanco to Anejo), its a definite step up in flavor, IMO. I went through a good number of higher end tequilas in the last 15+ years I've been drinking them and when I tasted this one I had an eye opening experience, they are better than pretty much any $100+ bottle out there. I was introduced to it by the GM of a Santa Monica restaurant, they have 80+ premium tequilas on their list, and this was his favorite, I couldn't agree more.
Browse Hi Time Wine and Liquor shop's selection, they are in SoCal (Newport Beach area), its a tequila museum of best of the best, all at gret prices. Same for cognac and wine, BTW. At least I have not found any place in SF area to match their selection and every time I go to Orange County I make sure to stop buy the place. They do ship.

My wife really, really likes the Patron XO Coffee -- very nice flavor. If you like Kaluha, then you will love this, much better flavor, and more alcohol!
I prefer Don Julion Anejo, Herradura Anejo, or for special occaisions Don Julio 1942 Anejo. For extra special occaisons I like Patron Gran Burdeos.
Actually, I am not picky -- as long as it is 100% de Agave -- I will drink Blanco, Reposado, or Anejo. I have enjoyed Patron, Coralejo, and Cazadores -- all good Tequilas.
I also agree with a previous poster -- the best way is to use a brandy snifter. No salt. No lime. No ice.
I enjoy the Patron Silver.
I've always wanted to try Milagro Romance Tequila, but at $100 a shot at bars I find them is out of my budget.

Do they grow the agave there? I drove past an agave field in the Yucatan. Soon, the Yucatan will officially be able manufacture Tequila. Such a beautiful sight; a field of amazing agaves!
TheRiddick

They will ship the agave here. One of them, in Alameda will actually roast the plants there and then ship them here, this will force them into calling the product something other than Tequila per rules and regulations (must be 100% Mexico made). The other two will make the entire product in Mexico.
One of the them is Bermejo, the guy who put tequila on the map here in States with his tequila bar in SF (over 130 different ones available, plus he offers classes, writes books, etc.) He's the Roy Hersch of tequila, since you know Roy.
The other one is a father and son team, 4th and 5th generations of distillers from old days in Yugoslavia. They make incredible vodka called Charbay (made in Mendocino) using actual fruit as its flavoring (as opposed to various additions others do). I am sure they will come up with something serious, not that the others won't. They also make great Cab from Spring Mountain grapes (Napa, where they live).
The guys who will ship the roasted agave here make one of the best vodkas around as well, Hanger One. They also make various distilled products and actually better grappa (and much more affordable as well) than most Italian made products.
This will be interesting.
Try to find a bottle of Partida, this is the "new" generation of artisanal tequila to me and shows the direction the product is headed. LA area resident backed by some banker (to invest in the land her family heldin Mexico), so if anything, she started the trend.

I purchased my first bottle of Casa Noble Crystal (blanco) Friday on the way home after work. It was only $2.00 cheaper than the Petron Silver and IMO not really comparable. To me, it has more flavors, but is less smooth, an expected trade off perhaps.

The Penca is as refined as the best Tequila. The flavor is just way out there. Pine, tar, agave... Just hard to pinpoint, but it's for sure an agave drink. Really smooth stuff.

As a gift to me, people have not gone wrong with the Don Julio, that is for sure. A guy used to travel overseas all the time and bring me back stuff, and the time he brought the D.J., I was floored...then I got FLOORED.
Wow, beat me by a few minutes -- I was going to say the same -- Patron is getting to be ridiculously priced -- Casa Noble is usually $15-20 less and a better tequila.

Brad - Hornitos Reposado is a fine tequila that runs $22-$23 around these parts. I can drink it straight. Damn fine for mixing. Can it match up against the higher end stuff? Of course not. But for the money, I think it is a great value.

Still couldn't find out much more about your Tejano Tequila. It produced by a relatively new distillery in El Arenal, Jalisco.
Leticia Hermosillo Ravelero, S.A. de C.V.
It looks like they may have just started up in 2008/2009 and it also looks like they make about 6 or 7 other brands which may or may not be distributed in the U.S. I'm familar with one of their brands, Cava de Oro, which is pretty good but maybe the Tejano is a new release for them.
If you like it......drink it........it's good tequila

What did you think of the Don Julio Anejo? I do not think it is anything special. Their silver is the benchmark. I love the Cuervo Anejo, but can only get it in Mexico. Not sure why they wouldn't export it? Centenario Anejo is decent too.

I have not opened the Don Julio Anejo yet. I picked it up on a recommendation from my son. We both have very similar taste. I will open it when I finish off a bottle of Chinaco Anejo I opened awhile ago. It's an amazing anejo, although I am not real big on anejo, but it is one of the best I've ever tried. I do enjoy repo and anejo from time to time, but I am much more of a Blanco/Sliver/Crystal person.

A rep from Jose Cuervo came to last month's cigar dinner. He brought some Don Julio, and Jose Cuervo tequila.

One of my favorites is a lower-end 100% agave by Sauza, 100 Anos.
Costs about $25/ 750ml in the states (at least around my area), but I tend to buy it in Mexico for about $12. Not to be confused with the Reposado, which is inferior.
However, the BIG question for all you tequila fans is:
With what cigar do you pair it?
I find most cigars clash with the sweet-salty-spiciness of a good tequila, & I've only found a few cigars that really complement the flavor, mostly Honduran for some inexplicable reason. San Luis Rey & Punch Gran Puro being the best pairings. Perdomo Reserve Cameroon (now discontinued) & TTT Trinidad beng the best runner-ups.
What cigar do YOU prefer with a night of tequila?

For me, it's all about Mezcal once I tried a high end one. I have plenty of top end Tequila that I could care less about after one sip of that Mezcal. It's like Tequila on steroids; at least flavorwise. The smoothness and quality was equal to any top brand you can name.

Interesting. I was at a high-end, chain Mexican restaurant last week and was talking tequila with the manager and he said the he perferred the reposados and blanco to the anejo. He said the anejo is like drinking bourbon and that you get much better "tequila flavor" from the reposado and blanco. I'm going to start trying the reps and blancos now.
I did procure a bottle of the DJ 1942 and it's some wonderful stuff :dr

Yes, they are all agave products, but Tequila is made only from agave grown in Tequila County, Mexico. Mezcal and Sotol are ways made from wild agave grown throughout the rest of Mexico. I do not recall exactly but there are some distinct differences in the process in which each is made as well. That fact, along with the different varieties of agave used in making Mezcal & Sotol make them different animals. If is often said that Tequila can be called a Mezcal or Sotol, however, Sotol and Mezcal cannot be called a Tequila. The reason for that is that both Mezcal and Sotol are not made from the agave grown in Tequila County, Mexico.

Mezcal:
Note: Mezcal & Sotol both come as Blancos, Reposados and Anejos!
Del Maguey Blanco is a good brand of Mezcal with several offerings from about $25 to over $100. The low price offerings are excellent, no need to spend big bucks!
Monte Alban Reposado is also very good at around $25 a bottle.
Dos Gusanos is still another in the $20/$30 range which is very good.
There are a lot of Mezcal brands out there, of course, not as many as there are Tequila. Don’t make the mistake of looking for the Mezcal with the worms or scorpions or other critters in the bottles. Usually the better Mezcals do not have any critters within the bottles.
Sotol:
IMHO, one of the very best out there is Hacienda De Chihuahua Sotol Plata, which is a blanco. This sells in the $30 range. This is also available in all three styles.
Don Cuco Sotol Tradicional is also very good.
Leyenda Soto is extremely good as well!
There are far fewer brands of Sotol than Mezcal out there that come into the USA. Sotol is truly the very first beverage made from the Agave and has been around forever. It is produced exactly the same way Tequila is produced, but it is made from wild agave. It is, and always has been what Tequila is today. The only difference it that it is made from wild agave and not farm grown agave from Tequila County, Mexico.

I heard last night, at a tequila dinner, that the root of the agave plant is roasted when making mezcal and steamed when making tequila.
I did impress the hostess of the event when she asked what the difference was between tequila and mezcal. Told her it's where the agave is grown. Thanks for the lesson :tu

Unfortunately, the place I bought these from online did not have the Blanco. I think the place was trying to get rid of them as they were pretty much 1/2 off. The few places online that have the blanco left are full price.

Partida is my second favorite Tequila at this time in my life. The Anejo is remarkable. Do your self a favor and try a bottle of Casa Noble, which ever style you favor. For me, although I really enjoy Anejo, my preferred choice is always a Blanco/Crystal/Silver, you get the idea.
Hey Johnny - it has been a while.
Yeh, I tried a 50 ml sampler of the Partida Anejo and it was unbelievable, so I grabbed the silver and the reposado as they were out of the Anejo. I may grab a bottle of that tomorrow at a different store.
I will definitey try the Casa Noble - I will look for a 50 ml sample to start.
I hope all is well!

Here is a collection of some of my favorites:
http://www.cigarasylum.com/vb/picture.php?albumid=581&pictureid=4249
I also like single malt scotch and I think Tequila goes just as well with cigars as other drinks. It all depends what you are in the mood for. Sometimes it's water, sometimes it's coffee, sometimes it's scotch and sometimes it is tequila.
There is no right or wrong, only what you like.

I bought a 50 ml of the Corzo today to give it a try. They also had a 50 ml of the Asombroso Extra Anejo for $25. This is the first time I have seen one of the ultra premiums in a sample that size. I almost pulled the trigger, but since I have not had any of the other ones, I figured I would pass.
How is the Asombroso Rosa?
I also have a bottle of the coffee Patron, but it was not in the picture.
I have liked the margaritas I have had with Cazadores in them, I have just not gotten around to buying any yet. For a medium priced Tequila, it is pretty good.
I have also had El Tesoro Platinum and that was pretty good as well.
I love seeing Tequila collections!

One of my favorite recent drinks has been 30-30 with juice of 1/4-1/2 of a lime over ice. Since it has no sweetness in it doesn't really taste much like a margarita. Just a nice refreshing sipping drink.

The Corzo is OK -- but I prefer Cazadores much more than Corzo. The Asombroso Rosa is good -- especially since it is so different from other tequilas. The Patron XO Cafe is perfect over shaved or crushed ice!

What a great thread!
Like many, I had more than my share of bad tequilas in my 20's but have now recovered. :) I have enjoyed Patron Silver a lot and thought Cabo Wabo Resposado was pretty good. They are the only two "better" tequilas I've had since my recovery. ;) I made it a point to look for Casa Noble Crystal at my local liquor store today but they didn't have it. Surprisingly, not a very good selection actually, whereas otherwise they have a great selection of spirits/wines/beer. I hope to find it soon!
Really, I just wanted to bump this fine thread. :D

Never been much of a Patron fan. I think it is waaaaay overpriced and definitely overrated. It is decent, but I would never pay over $30 for it. No one really even touches the stuff down here in little Mexico. My go to's are Herradura, Cazadores, Pepe Zevada and a very small distillery called Cavalino (http://www.tastings.com/scout_spirits.lasso?id=192278) This stuff is simply amazing. It beats ever tequila I have ever had by a large, large margin. It is stupid cheap too at about $23/ 750ml. IF you can find it. pick it up.

Now, I'm not one to spend money on labels so I was just curious if anyone had tried this and what they thought. In that case...
There is a place on the malecon (main drag) called Casa Del Tequila that has a decent selection as well as some open bottles that you can try before buying. Any cab driver worth his salt will know the place. They also get some of the harder to get bottles. Two of the higher-end and boutiquier brands that I've tried are...
- Don German 3yr (~$75/bottle)
- Los Abuelos Anejo (Same)
You can save about 10-15% by buying from a LaPlaya but you cannot sample before buying there - they may not have some of the more esoteric bottlings available. I've heard really good things about the 70th Anniversary bottling of El Tesoro but it was a limited run and prices may be over $150. Casa Del Tequila would be best to ask about this one.
If money is no object, perhaps Casa Noble Single Cask bottles may be of interest. Not sure how much the Anejo bottling is, but I heard it is a 5yr old, and that means $$$. Casa Noble is a very well-regarded brand though.

Gran Patron Platinum (Blanco) can be had for ~$220-$230 a bottle. The $500 bottle of Patron is the Burdeos (Anejo)
It's definitely an experience I will say that. However in general I found it too smooth and lacking in the flavor department. It was unbelievably smooth though I mean I could have funneled that bottle. However mine lasted me 6 months. 3 days out of 6 months but still.

Ah. Up here (Toronto) we found one for $450 and when family went to PV for a visit the price they quoted...I don't remember but it wasn't much cheaper than the Toronto price. Sounds like the booze taxes where you live are pretty good! I only had a couple of samples, but I remember it being well-crafted, balanced, and flavourful. Wonderfuly smooth but with enough flavour for me to complain why it wasn't cheaper.

One thing that came to mind. Generally I think tequila prices are slightly higher in Mexico than the US due to taxes. True, there are a few brands that are not made for export that you can't get outside the country (I believe Don German is one of those) but generally I don't think there will be any great deals to be had relative to what you can get in Texas.

Question for you tequila nerds--> What do you suggest for Margaritas. I mean simple clean margaritas. NO MIX DAMMIT. I use fresh lime juice, Patron Citronge (cheaper than Cointreau and tastes the same), and maybe a dash of club soda.
So with that said....what do you suggest for tequila and do you have a killer recipe I should try? I do NOT like spicy tequila. Thats the only catch for me. Usually, I use Silver or Reposado.

Fresh lime juice, agave nectar and tequila. Occasionally I add water depending on what type of agave nectar I buy (pure versus diluted).

So, I'm currently looking at tequila.net reviews and there are several highly rated anejos that are listed in the $35-70 range-more so than the very high priced stuff. It will be a miracle if I don't find a place and order several bottles online.

After looking at a number of reviews, I've got it "narrowed" down to just 13 anejos and having a hell of a time eliminating any of these:
1) Corrido
2) Don Pilar
3) Peligroso
4) Azunia
5) El Jimador
6) Casa Noble
7) Don Julio
8) El Tesoro
9) Siete Leguas
10) Don Lunas
11) 4 Copas
12) Partida
13) Riazul
I'd prefer to keep my initial tequila "inventory" to be about half of that size. So far, the "musts" seem to be Partida, El Tesoro, Don Pilar, and Riazul. Any suggestions?

From what I am seeing, Herradura isn't a highly rated anejo. Obviously, ratings are subjective whether it involves cigars or tequila, but I'm more inclined to start out with several that are rated much higher and sound more appealing from the tasting notes I've read thus far.

Espolon & Casa Noble are two brands of Tequila I quite enjoy; how are their Anejo's rated?

I took the mrs out for dinner and found a Mexican place that listed a tequila bar, so I had to check it out for myself. They had a great selection actually. I tried tha Partida anejo and it was quite nice. I'll be adding that one to my collection soon.

This is one site I came across: http://www.tequila.net/reviews-ratings.html
The casa noble has some good reviews and is one I had a miniature of once I recognized the bottle.

Tres Generaciones Anejo - May be the BEST there is.
Other Fav's of mine are Avion Anejo, El Jimador Reposado and Espolon Reposado.
For $20 a bottle, the Espolon Rep may be the best bang for the buck.

That's cheap! Is it normally that price? Would be a no-brainer if so. Costco has two good Kirkland Tequilas that worth picking up for mixed drinks.

Love the costco tequila. Had to go with Sauza Hornitos today. Damn small town selection.

Moses... That's the regular price. I promise you this stuff kicks, and is better than a lot twice it's price. The bottle has skeletons on it. Give it a shot. ;)

I bought a bottle about 4 years ago. Had no idea how much I paid, but enjoyed the bottle a lot. I only buy or get good stuff so assumed it cost more.
