There are definitely differences in quality and compatibility.

Crucial is a good bet as they offer guaranteed compatibility and a life time warranty.

Getting a matched pair also has it's benefits.

So....I am ready to upgrade.

I checked out various places like Crucial, NewEgg, etc.
Seems around $59 gets me 4 GB.
Question I have is does it make a difference what brand the memory is?

32-bit versions of Windows can only effectively use up to 3120Mb (roughly 3 gigs) due to software limitations (claimed to allow compatibility on older machines), and can be forced into using a full 4Gb via registry changes. Otherwise, the 4th gig is essentially only used by hardware such as shared video memory tasks.

Much love to 64-bit OS's for opening that up, but even then Vista was proven to actually SLOW DOWN with more than 16 GB of RAM (inefficient memory use) until Service Pack 1 came out and ended that problem.

Just wanted to bump this post. Important thing to remember, unless you're running a 64-bit OS, there's no point in putting more than even 3 GB in a computer, the OS barely recognizes part of the 4th GB and it doesn't give any noticeable benefit.

That's why my next CPU is gonna run a 64-bit OS.:D

Does that apply to my MacBook also or just PC?

Depends Carlos. Current macbooks run 4 gigs no problem, but the pre santa rosa chipset macs will only recognize 3.3 gigs.

Mine is a year old.
I have the 2.2 Ghz Intel core 2 Duo Processor
Has 1 GB (2 x 512MB SO-DIMMs) of DDR2 SDRAM.

Re: 4GB of RAM is awesome....

I have to vouch for the Vista...
I have a 4GB Gateway laptop running the 64-bit Vista, I usually just hibernate it and it starts up in 15 seconds or so, and runs multiple pages very quickly and easily. But I don't use it for games so it's untested there.

Plus, I got it for a good deal because the Circuit City salesguy tried to bait n' switch me and rip me off $200. Had to talk to three managers but walked out with it for a decent price. They went out of business didn't they? That's karma or something. :ss

This is what they recommended as has been tested for Mac.
Thought I would share if any other Mac users are interested.

Here is the G-skill tech's response relative to the 2 GB v. 4 GB:
And the memory upgrading from 2 to 4GB may not be obvious.

The 2 GB is $29.
The 4 GB is $49.
Wonder if I should go with the 2 or spend an extra $20 and be maxed out and not have to ever worry about it again.
I think I will go with the 4. Need to supplement all things bigger.

Blueface 02-24-2009 07:57 PM

Re: 4GB of RAM is awesome....

I take that back.
After reading all the reviews on both and after receiving the feedback here and from G-Skill, I have decided why pay more for something I don't need and by the time I do need it, if I do need it at all, it will be dirt cheaper than it is today.
So, I went with the 2 GB which doubles what I have now and it seems everyone was for the most part satisfied with the success of the installation.
On the 4 GB, it seems there were more issues prevalent.
Rather not deal with that nonsense, specially given my Apple history.
For $32 bucks after tax, how can you go wrong?

That's bunk, macs don't use special ram. I've installed both types of ram I linked to in this thread in macs i've upgraded for myself/family/friends. That's just a gimmick to make you spend more.

I would have probably gone and done the 4 gigs myself honestly. It's cheap and simple, but then i've always been of the opinion that there's no such thing as too much ram.

It is my first time doing it and won't probably need the 4 for some time.
I figured for $32, heck, I spend more than that for two martinis in Boca.
If I ever start running stuff that can use more ram, the upgrade to 4 will either cost a buck or I won't be using this laptop anymore and will have a fancy MacPro with virtual holographic controls and 100 ram standard. :r

BTW, the price was the same between the Mac one and the one that was not Mac tested.

The one you linked to was eight whole dollars more than the one I linked! EIGHT DOLLARS Carlos. Think of all the things you can do with eight dollars. The possibilities are endless.

What you actually have is 512, 32 of which is sucked up by video memory. Depending on what you're running, that might be enough.

A P4 machine would really benefit from a bump up to 1 gig or more. Honestly it will probably cost you less than $15 and it is easiest computer hardware upgrade to accomplish.

Well, my new RAM is here.
Nice package with Apple's symbol on the outside.
I swear it looks like something you buy from Apple directly.
Says "Apple Series DDR2 Modules" on the box.
Can't wait to install it later tonight and hopefully not trash my laptop while at it.
Those who follow the Blueface/Carlos saga with his MacBook, stay tuned. This should be a nail biting season ending episode.:r:r:r

So I just want to point a good deed done by and extend a public thank you to Andrew, AD720. I shot Andrew a PM with my computer info and he sent me back a direct link to purchase the memory I needed to upgrade my machine and a link with a step by step tutorial on how to do it. He also gave me his phone number in case I ran into problems and needed to call him while changing it out. So last night I got everything done and what a difference. Now my 5 year old machine is only about 4 years old.;)

Now Andrew doesn't know me from Adam's housecat, but took the time to help me out. I appreciate that. A lot. It's brothers like this that make this a great place to hangout. So again Andrew, "Thank you".

Given he was resourceful enough to find all that information for you, I bet he would see the fur on the cat a mile away and tell the difference.:r:r:r

Couldn't resist.

Kidding aside, that is in fact so cool to have the resources we do when we are part of a family like we are here.
There is a wealth of knowledge to be tapped and so many are so willing to share what they know.

What you don't know is that rizzle is actually a cat.

(I could make various 'Bama jokes that would involve alternative names for cats; but I'll refrain ... especially given the pathetic record of my new employer ... and my current employer, for that matter.)

I'll be the first to admit, my new team has some "rebuilding" to do. A good first step might be to fire the high school coach (I'm not even joking) that they hired and get a REAL coach worthy of a college team with a rich history (Mean Joe Green, anyone?).

So to you I say, "touché!"
