The Tebow Thread, lol

Everyone knows I don't like Tim Tebow, half of the reasons I have been asked not to bring up on
this board. But the other half are more or less open season. It's not that I dislike the guy, he
is a legend and a heck of a runner. I am also not buying so much the "Tebow benefits a NFL team
because everywhere he has been he was a winner." But for the most part I have stopped just
plain hating on him because he is out of college finally and seems to be having mixed but reasonable
success in the NFL where I always thought he would do OK. But today I read this article:

http://www.thepostgame.com/blog/styl...-york-jets-nfl

And in it there is a pretty good summation of my thoughts on Tebow from day 1.
"This, really, is the root of my beef with Tebowmania: It has nothing to do with football,"
writes Devin Gordon. "It's a sales pitch -- a sensation built on evangelism, not ability, powered
by people who see a chance to turn the NFL into the next front of the culture war. And now
that culture war is coming to my team."

I doubt he is saying Tebow ANYTHING has nothing to do with football, but I think
it is clear that the HYPE that follows him and comes flowing from the lips of his biggest proponents
is fairly well characterized in Devin Gordon's statement. I think it is great that he is a role model
and seeming proof that people can lead a righteous life in a sick world. But I don't necessarily want
to hear about it like it's the one true path in life.

I know 80% of you disagree with me, but it was interesting to me that the guy managed to
sum up my feelings on the matter so well. As for the rest of the article and the photo, Jeezus.
All pun intended.

Ehh, Brad, though I don't much like Tebowmania either, and absolutely DREAD the fact that it's gonna hit my town like a ton of bricks in about a month, I'd have more sympathy with your position if you'd just fess up to the fact you learned to hate Tebow when he was beatin' up on your LSU Tigers. :r

;s , but we all know it anyway, so what's the diff?

Wait so "Tebowmania" is still going on? I thought it had more or less officially ended when he got traded.

You can easily read as much by the line "now that he is out of college, finally...."

And to be honest, he didn't beat LSU every year he was at Florida. In fact, the
year he won the Heisman Trophy, LSU beat Florida 28-24...While he was ON THE TEAM,
LSU only won one out of four. He only started two years, right? I think his proponents
were hollering his name from the stands even back then to get him in the game.

And for those of you who will not read the article, you SHOULD see the photo.
Utterly, ridiculously, overly-symbolic. He should be smarter than to pose like that.
Unless of course he wants you to relate Jesus and Tim Tebow so closely. jeez.

That hasn't made a difference!
He's managed to capture the back page of every NY area paper.
Probably the first Backup player to do so since Jeff Hostetler.
Tebow's done it without taking a pro snap here.
Hostetler had to win the Superbowl to wind up there.

Yepper, Dom . . . which is why I'm dreading the day he hits town, as I expect parades down Main Street here. And it will only get worse the first time Sanchez throws a couple picks, and the "Tebow!" chants start.

Tom and Dom, with ringside seats. One watching the highwire act, the other waiting for the clowns to come. :r

Re: The Tebow Thread, lol

I'm no big Tebow fan in the sense that I don't see a football player there. I truly hope he comes along, makes me eat my words, and kicks The Dirty out of his seat. Sanchez's numbers are absolutely pathetic. Sanchez could be effectively replaced by Seneca Wallace, let alone Tebow. Mind ya, this is from a guy who has been a Sanchez fan up until last year when his suckage became a thing of legend. I liked him despite the fact that I can't stand the Jets and think Rex Ryan is the biggest dick in football.
But I digress...
I think it's great that Tebow is creating a fervor based around his Faith. In my eyes, that's a far greater role model than Ochocinco or Dez Bryant, or James Harrison, or any other number of not so savory characters in the NFL today.

This is the first time I've seen the GQ picture, and I really don't have any thoughts on it. I'm not sure what they were shooting for, besides more sensationalism, or to be provocative, or to fuel the Tebowmania, or most likely, to sell magazines.

That stuff aside, I don't see Sanchez making it past Week 7. I wouldn't be surprised if he was holding his helmet on his lap by Week 5.

For the people that have issues with Tebow, the media has a major factor in his popularity. People should be hating on the media more than the guy himself:2

Scott, I do not see an NFL QB there, but I do see a football player. The guy's a horse! Aside from that, I've no issue with what you said.

Yeah, there's that. It's the biggest problem I have with Tiger Woods also, which is not his fault. You read the papers, and the headline does not say that Phil or Ernie (for instance) are up two strokes, but rather that Tiger is 6 out. WTF??

Re: The Tebow Thread, lol

I should have said "NFL quarterback" there, Tom. The kid's work ethic is second to none, and he's got a real low bar to crawl over in New York. If there's a place for him to become an NFL quarterback, New York is it.
Looking back at the Manningathon, Peyton is the best thing that's ever happened to Tim. Or you could say Andrew Luck is the best thing that's ever happened to Tim.
He's going to get yet ANOTHER opportunity to get some starts under his belt, and plain and simple, he puts asses in seats (not the the Jets need that, but he's not going to harm the draw, and he'll put asses in seats at opponent's stadiums.) He's gonna sell some jerseys, and when he finds his favorite receivers, those jerseys will sell, etc...

If he Tebows the Jets to the playoffs and produces another first round win, he's going to build even that much more credibility. Put the projected starts, wins, playoff wins, pleasing personality, media favorite, and everything else together, and you have your new Broadway Joe, except with less cockyness and Tim probably won't have as much fun as Joe.
He's a nice fit for the Jets if that all pans out, and the stage is set. It's Tebow's job to take. I can't see one single negative for him being in New York, and can't think of a better fit.
Oh, and I'd like to go on record as saying "Wildcat my ass." I'll believe that when I see it. Maybe Tim will relieve Sanchez in the red zone, but to spot in when they run wildcat? Really? Maybe I just have such a hard time believing it because I heard it coming out of Rex Ryan's mouth and his lips were moving. :D

The Poet 08-16-2012 02:04 PM

Re: The Tebow Thread, lol

Rex Ryan has stated emphatically that:

A) The Jets would run the wildcat sometimes.

B) Mark Sanchez is the starting QB.

What does this mean? Well, as I would not believe Rex were he to guarantee the sun shall rise tomorrow, I don't think it means much. :D

Re: The Tebow Thread, lol

Say what you will about Tebow, the fact of the matter is that he's remained humble, and a great role model for kids. He works hard, doesn't mouth off, and even with his newfound fame and fortune, he's remained true to his faith and his ethics.

You can't say that for very many people, and you can say that about even fewer celebrities. Tebow could be the worst player on the field, and I'd still have a strong admiration for him, in the same way that I admire another Tim, Tim Duncan.

Hate on Tebow all you want, but don't ask for him to go away. Kids need role models like him, not the narcissistic, self-destructive hedonism of the majority of professional football players out there.

The Poet 08-17-2012 02:25 PM

Re: The Tebow Thread, lol

Derek, I am amused by the hype surrounding Tebow, but I do not "hate on" him at all, and even wish him all the success he can earn. Yet I emphasize that "earn", and on this account I cannot put him in the same sentence with Tim Duncan, who has "earned" respect on personal and professional levels Tebow has not approached yet . . . and may never.

;s , but that's how I see it.

Re: The Tebow Thread, lol

Well spoken, Derrick. I agree 100%, although I have no thoughts on Tim Duncan.
The coolest part about Tebow's unfolding career is that whether it blossoms or ends up in he sh1tter, he's going to continue to set a fine example.
I'd like to see him do well and remain in the NFL for a good, long time on the sportsmanship basis alone. He's good for the NFL and fans on many levels.

I'm a Tebow fan and believe he is good for the NLF. Sure as hell beats the other players who make the news for drugs, spousal abuse, excessive speeding, rape, smuggling, etc. :2

...And all Jeremy Lin had to do was play in about ten games before he was being plastered all over the place and hailed as a Godsend. Me thinks now that he's in Houston we won't hardly hear anything about, "Linsanity." Point being; media, especially of the New York variety, over sensationalizes stories (and the individuals) such as these two.
