I agree $5 is high, although $3 isn't uncommon. That was one of the good things of the B&M near my old place in PA, I got deals on empty boxes from time to time and could 'cherry pick' unfinished...

I've seen the Montecristo Samurai in person and was unimpressed with the build quality. While it looks nice in the pictures it's basically two pieces of formed sheet metal of approximately 1/16"...
