Don't give up on the Bastard until you've tried the "Oaked" Arrogant Bastard Ale. The extra time in oak barrels really takes the bitterness out and considerably smooths it out into a delicious brew. That's one beer that I miss, living on the East Coast now; the prices are just way more than I'd like to pay for it after living only 30 miles from the brewery all my life and having it ubiquitous and relatively inexpensive. On the plus side, Bell's and Dogfish Head are way more affordable now that I live on the east coast.
