When I was a little kid in CA nobody pumped their own gas. The attendants did it, then checked your oil, tires and cleaned the windshield. They wore uniforms too. I think it was sometime in the sixties that stations started transitioning to self service, and I recall a lot of people being pretty ticked off. It took a while for everyone to accept self serve.
Apparently not everyone did.
