If you're prone to sunburn, a hat like this is very useful. I have a similar one I wear when I'm going to be on the water for a length of time.

I will sometimes wear a hat backwards but not too often. The sideways thing irks the hell out of me as does the pancake flat brim or the brim with the manufacturers sticker still on it or bright colored hats or hats with big giant graphics on them. I have worn hats backwards since I was in 7th grade before it was gangster to do so, so maybe that is why the backward hat thing doesn't bother me. If anyone came to me wearing a baseball cap to discuss business they would lose all credibility with me unless we were having a casual meeting at a baseball game. Most of the hats I wear backwards these days are hats that are usually a gift and the brims are awkward in some way or if the hat is a little on the snug side and just doesn't look right frontward.
