The Big 10 has actually had a varying number of schools in its history. It was actually founded with 7 schools in 1896. Original schools were University of Chicago, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Northwestern, Purdue and Wisconsin. In 1899, Iowa and Indiana joined. Ohio State joined in 1912, finally giving it 10 schools. In 1946, University of Chicago left the conference after being unable to stay competitive athletically . They were replaced with Michigan State in 1949. Penn State joined in 1990, maxing it a 11 team conference, the Big Televen, as some like to call it. The Big 10 is the oldest Div. I athletic conference.
