Humidor beads-Anyone understand the science?

I am at work and too busy yo search right now, Duane, but this has been discussed ad nauseum here if you do a little digging.

I know nothing about the science. Only that the Heartfelt/Cigarmony beads are silica based and work perfectly for 4 years. Others like Shilala's HCM(Clay based) beads just as well.
