I thought it might be white gold at first. But when you file test it you can clearly see that it is plated copper. Apparently this type of fake gold is very common. The detectorists call it "flea market gold". The 14k mark is like a bag with a Gucci label- if it sounds too good to be true, it was probably made in China.

Oh, and here's a 1oz copper bullion coin. I had no idea they even made these until I dug one out of the sand. It must have been someone's lucky coin.

Fun hobby, even though I routinely take abuse from the Rochester Crew about it. They can laugh all they want. I'm the one who spent the day at the beach and came home with free gold...

Here are some pics of my total finds from 2013. I go out 12 months out of the year, fresh water hunting in Lake Ontario, mostly. Dry sand and in water up to my chest at the local beaches.

Cell Phones

Pocketknives and working lighters

Junk jewelry

Coins and tokens. Silver dimes and wheat cents. Narcotics Anon. coin.
