| New hardware installed. | 601 Blue Box-pressed Maduro

This is a fantastic cigar It is like smoking a a perfectly cooked NY-strip, sweet and meaty. Firmly packed, no soft spots. Just enough sweetness to know you are smoking a maduro but enough kick to leave no doubt that this is a Pepin creation. Tons of smoke, slow even burn. This was my second robusto sized vitola in a few days and it smoked like a churchill. I have been smoking my way through various Pepin creations, this one is definitely near the top.

I can't believe I had to go back as far as 2010 to find reviews of this beauty; then again, "601" is not searchable, so I had to get creative. My theory is that sometimes, there's a cigar so damn good that everyone wants to keep it for themselves. This one was part of lottery winnings, generously supplied by Hem (Bill). First thing, this felt like an iron bar in the hand, it is so dense. Second, the delicious, intense scent of dark chocolate, the kind with 88%+ cocoa content. Spicy too, but not in an "in your face" way; warm spices. I have to believe this was well-aged, since the strength was there but not overpowering like some of Pepin's blends. A truly wonderful smoke; What are the other 601s like?

For me the 601 blacks are okay but the reds and greens just don't do it for me. Even the blacks are hit and miss for me. Some I really enjoy and some I can only get about halfway through. However, I love the blues. They are fantastic. Very consistent very tasty

Also a 10-pack of two of each 601 for about $38. That's a steal, if the others are any good at all.

You know, I really tried to like these. They were tolerable, decent even. But I don't get all the hype. I'd rather have an El Rey del Mundo Robusto (the tissue wrapped maduro), it is sweeter and tastier to me and definitely not as bitter and harsh.

The El Rey I had, (yes it was tissue wrapped) was ok at best IMHO, I didn't pick up any sweet flavors? maybe the one I got was bunk but where I would give the 601 Blue a 5/5.... I'd give the El Rey 3/5 at best... Once again, Just my humble opinion, but that's the wonder of cigars, different strokes, Different Folks... | |

Robusto. I wish Bill would weigh in, but think this was an aged stick; if they're this good fresh, it would be mind-blowing to age some. I've never had a cigar that smelled exactly like a bar of really dark, high-quality chocolate, and the flavor did not disappoint.
