I started with the original Poppery before upgrading to a Behmor. Worked great, if you can find them. Checkout http://www.thepeoplesroast.com for more info on using a popcorn popper. That's where I got mine. They occasionally get them in stock.
For a grinder, go with a burr grinder. I bought a Bodum which has lasted me great for the last 3 years.
