I for one was elated to read the news reports. It's always just kinda pissed me off that a handful of "pirates" in little speed boats could actually take over a big ass ship like they do. Practice.

1 Tomahawk Block IV cruise missile.
Practice

1 pirate speed boat.
1 Navy/Marine AH-1 SuperCobra
1 AGM-114 Hellfire
Practice

The list could go on.

And before I forget - kudos to France also for jumping in and kicking some butt themselves.

My house is not federal territory, kidnapping is a federal crime. I can defend myself and my house without help from any federal authority, since self defense is a God-given right. I would think anyone has the right to self defense anywhere, especially on a ship in international waters where nobody else can decide what to do.
I wonder if there is any money to be made in independent pirate hunting.

A French warship caught a "mother ship" 500 nautical miles (925 kilometres) off the Kenyan coast after tracking them from a failed attack on a Liberian-registered vessel, a French Defence Ministry spokesman said.

The 10-metre (33-foot) mother ship was carrying two assault skiffs for attacks, the spokesman said, adding that the captives were being held on the warship, the Nivose.

"The frigate spotted the pirates on the evening of April 14 when its helicopter intervened to thwart an attack on the merchant ship Safmarine Asia. It followed their boats overnight and intervened at dawn," he said.

My neighbor is a merchant marine (just left for sea yesterday) and we've talked on this issue before. Making a wake is about the best the large ships can do. They are not nimble enough to start ramming pirate boats. They could easily sink them if they could.

Most of the pirates go for low sidewall boats and get on at night. The issue of preventing pirate attacks is more complex and has a risk vs. cost element to it that the shipping companies appear to be OK with.

Well, I look at it this way....MORE TARGET PRACTICE FOR THE U.S. NAVY SEALS AND THE SPECIAL FORCES GUYS'. HELL YEAH! Nothing like an early morning cigar and a sniper shot to the face. They will learn when their buddies start dying off one by one!

Simple fix is repeal the disarmament laws many international ships are bound by. Armed people are less often considered as potential victims than their unarmed counterparts.

There are many ways to prevent boarding...we practice it all the time....for these ships, firehoses are the best bet.........if they get a boarding ladder up either cut it off, or a sledge hammer on top of the head as they come up works.
