My memory of John Lithgow before 3rd Rock was of him playing more evil type characters, though I can't remember which movies. I think there was one with a young Denzel. In any case, I remember the discussion being that it was great seeing him in such a comedic role after all the evil roles.

Now I remember ... he played the serial killer in Blow Out, opposite John Travolta and Nancy Allen. Great Brian De Palma film.
