Re: "Boardwalk Empire" Season 1 Banter
This show looks great, good scenery, great costumes, incredibly detailed period depictions. What I'm missing is a story to pull me in and keep me interested. I just don't have a reason to care about any of the characters right now. After three weeks lets go through em Jimmy - He's decided he wants to be a gangster and has just abandoned his common-law wife and son. Nucky - he likes to sleep with showgirls, is move liquor and is free with his money - only slightly redeeming qualities I've seen are that he deals fairly with everyone and takes on charity cases. The sheriff brother is an ass and is only still around because of Nucky. They can't seem to decide what to do with the irish widow, one week she is coming to Nucky for help, next week refusing it, pretending to be too proud to take it. All the remaining characters are caricatures of mobsters, showgirls, black leaders, and businessmen. I'll give it a few more weeks, to see if there are some more interesting developments, but so far I just see a number of very good actors (Buscemi, Gretchen Mol and Michael K. Williams mainly) wasting their time on weak material.
The Sopranos worked because Tony was an engaging character. We didn't like him, weren't meant to. But we wanted to know more about him, just as we wanted to know more about his crew and his family. We wanted to see just how far he would go, and how low he would sink. Boardwalk Empire is missing the human depth that was the center of The Sopranos.

Re: "Boardwalk Empire" Season 1 Banter
The Sopranos was likely the last of the great tv or movie mob
depictions. Ive been going to AC, as we call it in Philly, since i was 2 yrs old, before the casinos. I actually was the parking lot attendant next to the Ritz as a summer job after my freshman yr. in college. Empire is showing a snapshot of prohibition that isnt normally talked about. How many of us knew AC played such an intergral part in liquor then. Nucky was in the right place at the right time, and he knew what to do with it. I predict the girl in the dress shop becomes his girlfriend. |

Just watched the latest episode and I was very entertained. I think it's finally starting to hook me in. Capone and Jimmy are going to be an entertaining duo, I think.

#1: a man affiliated with the crew who already possessed the chicago area's alcohol provisions. I think he was making a statement to Jimmy and al. #2: the woman was jimmy's mother, and the guy was lucky Luciano. |

Ahh... that makes sense. Isn't Luciano trying to kill Jimmy?

The last episode was really good IMO. They are doing a great job mixing in the historical events of the times, no matter how nasty, with the plot development: prevalence of the KKK throughout America in the 20s, Bolshevik Revolution in Russia, debate about the League of Nations, Jim Crow laws etc. I'm hoping next they'll show a reunion of Civil War vets

She is probably keeping tabs on him to give Jimmy a heads up, maybe she will off him. One thing is for sure, she is going to get the clap trying to do so. That’s if she doesn’t already have it.
