Accumulation is not a bad thing so long as it does not affect your lifestyle due to money issues. If everything else is cool... why not?

Unlike most vices, accumulating cigars is not asset depleting. You can always sell them and they tend to appreciate over time if you buy the right ones. Coke habits on the other hand....

Cheers to this. After my accident, I smoke whatever, whenever... Cigars that is!

I was being sucked into this pattern in the beginning, but I prevented myself from falling into it. I don't keep any cigars for a special occasions . Every moment is a special occasion for me, and I don't get sucked into the hype of new a limited release cigars unless I tried them, and I know I like them.

I'm with Vin on this, though my "occasion" cigars aren't nearly as meaningful as what he has. For example, I like to get my hands on 2 camacho liberties a year, and my wife and I smoke them on July 4th. I like getting my hands on the 2 Tat Monster series, and we smoke those on Halloween after the kids are in bed. I smoke all I get, but I do "collect" certain cigars for certain days.

I see some of these humidors stacked with cigars and I can only think "I could never do that." I guess I have ADD when it comes to cigars I can't stock up just not my thing. Would I love to have a huge stock of thousands...maybe, but realistically I would probably just smoke through them all and call it a day. I guess every cigar I have is an occasion cigar as well as an everyday smoke.

The way they do it, is by buying more than you could ever possibly smoke, which means a couple of boxes every month for the average 1 cigar-a-day smoker.

Obviously, as a finance person, I'd suggest against doing so if the disposable income isn't present.

It is also a a lot easier to do when your buying habits continue to stay regular but your schedule does not allow you the free time to smoke as much. This has been a big problem of mine as of late. I have just been working my azz off and at the same time getting the house ready for the baby and all the other things that come along with it so for me I have been buying more than I can smoke which most people would say, "Well buy less." This would work if deals wouldn't come up along with all the damn new releases as of late. For example, I planned on smoking my azz off this whole weekend since it was a holiday weekend and I knew we would have company in town for the shower so what better way to spend time with friends and family. I smoked one stinkin' cigar just because I was too busy running here there and everywhere so I didn;t get to do near the damage I thought I would.
Plus for me I know I will probably be forced into a buying hiatus once the baby arrives so I might as well stock up now. Not to mention I see you only have 4 posts so sit back, relax because it is a slippery slope. I too had your thought process once. That thinking is long gone now. You'll see. Next year this time you too will probably have more cigars on hand than you could possibly smoke through quickly.

All mine are smokeable. At worst there are some that I have received that would be better smoked after some of the noobness has worn off my palate...but eventually, all will fall to the torch.

I have some that I've assigned a mental hold date of "do not open before ....." to. But that's just because I think they'll improve with a little age, and it gives me something to look forward to in the years ahead.

Other than that, I'm liable to light up anything I have at pretty much any time. When I finish the last one from a box or cab, I feel good - not sad.

I don't have quite as much time left on my warranty as a lot of you. Like Dave said, I don't want my last thought to be "Oh Hell, I never smoked that .....".

To me the key is just making more occasions special.

I have many "Special Occasion" smokes, but I don't wait for the once in a lifetime moment instead every HERF(large or small) I go to is a "Special Occasion" and I always bring something really nice to smoke and share., Playing a really nice Golf Course, Seeing an Old Friend, Vacation, Birthday, XMAS, New Years & so on is a "Special Occasion". Life's Short enjoy the best of what you got.

I love the collection aspect of the hobby. There are too few hobbies out there where you can spend 20-40 bucks and get rare or hard to find stuff! Think about this, what other hobby can you spend 20 bucks on a gift and impress even the most avid collector?

There's only two of those yellow band Columbus cigars (whatever the hell they are) in my humi that I am going to have a hard time lighting.
Other than that, any occasion where I'm with more than just me smoking can be cause to light a special cigar.
I admit I do have a tough time lighting special cigars just by myself. Not as much fun alone (my personal feeling) and no one to share it with.
I do enjoy the collecting and saving, but only because I know 20-30+ year old cigars can be(not always) some of the best, and I intend to save a large amount of my cigars that long for that reason.

I solve this by not having any super premium smokes.

But in all seriousness, I find myself doing this with the 30 year old scotch that I have. I hesitate to drink it unless I've hit a mile stone. Sometimes a milestone can be something as small as making it through a hellacious week, and sometimes as big as graduating college. It is all about not waiting for the gigantic special moments, but celebrating the milestones.

Wait for a special occasion? Hell, a good cigar can make the occassion special. Every cigar in my humi is fair game every time I open it.

No cigar in my possession is safe from the flame Derrick. I have gifted and been gifted some pretty darn special cigars over the years and all have been enjoyed.
When I gift what I know is a special cigar to someone,I want them to smoke and enjoy it,not save it.

I have some cigars that I buy with a plan to start smoking them at ten years of age. But I no longer have anything unsmokable, just things I'm waiting for the right date to smoke.
