I've seen the old bit where a guy dresses up like a scarecrow and sits on a porch chair. He then puts all the candy in a giant bowl in his lap with a sign that says please take only one. Then he waits and tries to stay still. If the kids take more than one piece he comes to life, yelling, etc. and scares the crap out of them.

Although my sign usually said, "Take only one - I am watching!"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lnDa2Zqvl6c The downside of the scarecrow prank. I've done it too. Had a fake scarecrow on my porch for a couple weeks in advance so all the kids got used to it when they would come over to the house. Then on Halloween, I pulled it, dressed in the same clothes with hay sticking out and everything. I did the screaming bit. Scared a LOT of kids and all of their parents. I like Rev's idea though. Sometimes less is more.
