I am not familar with AT&T Uverse, however make sure your modem is plugged in and running fine. Run a cat-5 from your modem to your router then a cat-5 from your xbox to your router. Go into setting on the xbox and run the connection test and it should guide you through everything. You may need to open up some ports too, do a Google search for Xbox Live ports.

Not familiar with the setup u have, but did you turn the router off and on again while plugged into the 360? I know mine sometimes doesn't recognize the xbox when i move it around between 2 different rooms until I turn off the router and restart it

Until you get an xboxlive account, you're not going to see much that leads you to believe you're hooked up to the internet.
